Always Admired This Palace: Now Open for Viewing at Casa Gourgion, Mdina! I've always admired Casa Gourgion in Mdina from afar. Its striking neo-Gothic facade, so distinct from the Baroque architecture prevalent in the Silent City, has always captivated me. Now that this truly unique palazzo has opened its doors to the public as a museum, my excitement was immense, and it certainly did not disappoint. Stepping into Casa Gourgion is like stepping into a beautifully preserved time capsule. The restoration has been meticulous, bringing back the grandeur and intricate details of Baron Giuseppe De Piro Gourgion's former residence. Each room is a testament to the refined taste of the Gourgion family, showcasing period furnishings, fascinating artifacts, and even the baron's personal study and library with books dating back centuries. What makes Casa Gourgion particularly special is its distinctive architectural style, which was quite controversial when it was built in the late 19th century. Yet, today, it stands as a celebrated "architectural folly" that adds a fascinating layer to Mdina's rich history. Exploring the exquisitely restored rooms, from the opulent living spaces to the surprisingly modern (for its time) bathroom, offers a truly intimate glimpse into aristocratic life. The staff are knowledgeable and the self-guided audio tour (available on your mobile device) allows you to delve into the captivating story of the house at your own pace. For those seeking an even deeper understanding, guided tours are also available. Whether you're a history enthusiast, an architecture admirer, or simply looking for a truly memorable experience in Mdina, a visit to Casa Gourgion is an absolute must. It's an opportunity to walk through living history and appreciate the artistry and legacy within its walls. I highly recommend it – a fantastic addition to Mdina's...
Read moreI finally managed to go see this magnificent Neo-Gothic house. By far this has always been my favorite house in Mdina due to its impressive facade and gargoyles that would attract anyone's attention. I have wanting to get in this house since I was a little kid, always stopping by admiring It while our parents would take us for the classic photo on the cathedral's cannon.
I must say it didn't disappoint. I took the tour which was fairly priced and I got literally lost admiring all the little details inside, from the antiques, architecture, and stained glass to the perfect little addition of Pinu's animation. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his work, you could tell he was there cause, just like me, he absolutely loves the house and its historical value.
I enjoyed it so much that I am planning to go once again to admire and soak in all the little details that I might have missed, not lose focus the information it was being given on the tour.
Keep up the good work and thanks once again for opening it up to the public. I am...
Read moreI had the pleasure of visiting this extraordinary house last Saturday, and I was completely mesmerised. The architecture alone is a breathtaking reminder of a bygone era — every arch, carving, and corridor tells a story. Inside, the lavish interiors are nothing short of spectacular, reflecting both the grandeur of the past and a deep respect for historical detail.
What stood out most, however, was the obvious love and care with which the house has been restored. It’s clear that preserving authenticity was at the heart of the project. Every room feels alive, as if the house is quietly whispering its history to those who pass through.
This is truly a hidden gem and a priceless part of our cultural heritage. We are so fortunate to have places like this preserved — not only to admire, but to remind us of the richness of our shared past. I wholeheartedly...
