This is a Beautiful place to visit! I arrived at this location just after 9 am. It was a great time to get few pics before the crowd showed up. Bus loads of people ha ha ha Funny, just before arriving to Cancun I found out that Cancun means, Nest of Snakes. I was laughing once I arrived, saying.. I'm in the Nest with The Snakes. But then later, a flash came to mind. It was a pic of the end of my braid. OMG, it looks like the end of a rattlesnake tale. WoW, That was weird. One of the drivers in Cancun, Efren, had a rattlesnake tale hanging from his rearview mirror, which he treasures, it was given to him years ago. I went looking for one, but I was told those are not longer being sold. ~~~~~~ Cancún is derived from the Mayan name kàan kun, composed of kàan “snake” and the verb kum ~ kun “to swell, overfill”. Two translations have been suggested: the first is "nest of snakes" and the second, less accepted one is "place of the golden snake".

El Rey is the largest Maya ruins on the former Cancun Island. This site dates to the Classic and Postclassic periods. The ruins have a linear arrangement along a prehistoric avenue. There are building platforms (for houses?) on both sides of the avenue with a temple and shrine complex in the middle. The site is excellent for photography. Remember when at the entrance to photograph the site map so you can refer to it while walking along the avenue. Congratulations to Mexico for having the foresight and preservation ethic to save El Rey from development. There is golf course on the west and the Cancun hotel zone to the east. If you seek an alternative to long bus rides to the fabulous (and crowded) Chichen Itza and Tulum sites, or have already seen them, try the El Meco, San Migeulito, and El Rey ruins in the Cancun vicinity. None of the latter three named sites are crowded.

This is an excellent place to find archeological structures. The entrance only costs 75 MXN per adult, kids are free. Cards are accepted. The place is flat and you can easily navigate with a stroller. You can find foundations of several residential and ceremonial buildings, a temple and a pyramid. It was pretty empty when I visited with only 2 other families onsite. There's a lot of wildlife in this area as well, we encountered many iguanas and a snake. Unfortunately, the information sighs are very rare and only describe a small number of buildings. But I definitely recommend to stop by this place if you're interested in relics of old civilisation.

This was a really wonderful site to visit, especially because we had our young children with us. It was much smaller than more notable places like Chicen Itza or Tulum, which worked out well because it held our children's interest and we didn't have to worry about meltdowns. They got the experience of visiting incredible Mayan ruins without worrying about being there for too long. The entry fee is very inexpensive and the clerk was very friendly. He did warn us not to mess with the iguanas and I would definitely heed that warning. Overall this is a really nice place to visit if you are in the area.

Visited at 8am on a Monday. First visitors there. Yes, was worth the visit. That time of the day ensured not a single fellow visitor in our photos! MAJOR TIP - APPLY MOSQUITO REPELLANT ALL OVER BEFORE YOU VISIT. They were nasty and many, and unlike other mosquitoes I've encountered which bite only if the exposed body part is stationary and take some seconds before they bite, the ones here were clinging to our skin even while moving around and shaking our arms or legs, and were able to instantly cling onto our skin! We're told this becomes even more menacing towards later in the day.

Nice, self-guided archeological site tour that is walking distance from the first part of the hotel zone. Tickets were sold as you entered for a reasonable price ($5 USD). We took a relaxing stroll and it took us about 45 minutes with reading some of the information and resting in the shade for a few. It was fairly close to the public beach and we were able to cross the street and walk back to our hotel along the beach. Would recommend this as a short visit for those interested in history and fine with a little bit of walking.
