Follow these steps to enjoy Playa Norte:
Bring a beach umbrella, very important. Buy it in the mainland or if staying at an Airbnb/hotel ask if they have one to borrow prior to your arrival. A couple of foldable chairs are also a good idea if at hand but not necessary. Go to a grocery and buy all the items needed to prepare snacks/sandwiches/tortas the day prior to your beach adventure. In the morning place the food in a cooler, along with water and beer, or your favorite tequila. Our Airbnb had a decent sized cooler bag so ask if one can be borrowed prior to your stay, or bite the bullet and buy one or bring from home. Skip this step if it is too much work, after all you are on vacation. Wake up early and make a point to arrive at the beach around 8am or earlier. Start scouting around the SW area of the beach and claim your spot. The majority of boats congregate around the NE part of the beach and vomit their tourists while playing loud music there. You will still see and hear all that but you maybe lucky and find a spot where your direct view of the sea is not marred by this eye sore. If you decided to skip step 2 then The restaurant Mexico Lindo y Querido opens around 9 am (closed on Mondays). The prices are decent and the food is one of the best in that island. Order a delicious meal and drinks (they are not licensed) for pick up and flip a coin and send the victim to collect the food. It is about a 10min walk from the North Beach, so maybe 20mins in total round trip. You can also check if it can be delivered. Enjoy the sun and the beach, but always keep an eye on your belongings. Leave by noon, unless you want to enjoy the mass of tourists walking around like zombies and getting shafted by the local bars/hotels. This can be entertaining but in the afternoon that whole place will be full of them and you need a more quiet and relaxed area to get your deserved siesta.
Note: If you get employees or people coming over and asking you to move because you are not a hotel guest you can tell them to bugger off. Playa Norte is a public beach, restaurants and hotels do not own the beach area. You got there first, so tough luck. If you get pushback then ask them to wait until the national guard, naval police and/or the municipal police come by to confirm this. This will shut them up. These groups of security details patrol the beach and you will probably see them at least once every 4 hours.
On to a brief review.
This beach starts with 5 starts, the location was at one point a paradise...but. 0.5 star less for the constant collection of boats vomiting tourists. They bring loud music and block the beautiful view of the sea. 0.5 star less for the insolence of the hotels and restaurants taking over some of the best shaded spots with their lines of chairs, and the balls to overcharge for unsavory meals and watered down drinks.
Overall you can mitigate these issues by following the steps above and enjoy your day at the beach, while keeping extra pesos in your pocket.
Give thumbs up to help other visitors view these logical and simple steps prior to their stay in Islas Mujeres. ...
Read moreso it was storm last night and water was full of reef :( …
we have read reviews about this Playa Norte beach like how beautiful it can be, its turquoise breath-taking water and best beaches in the world. I had even read blogs about it and by pictures, it deserves to be in it, but you cannot defeat nature here. After coming out of Isla Mujeres terminal, you can rent golf cart of scooty, we rented scooty and the first thing we did to drove to Playa Norte beach as we were super excited and had been to Cancun beaches so wanted to see this. And our excitement got thrashed back by water full of reefs… we asked staff over there who rent chair and umbrellas. They said it was a storm for last 2 days, so all reef came out from sea… yes, you can go inside the water, but reefs were floating and it was not a pleasant sight. Onshore, it was all blackish sand, so we bunked the idea of swimming over there. We were equally disappointed. But I would suggest if you are in Cancun, go to Gaviota Azul Beach (right behind the Hard rock café, coco bongo). Dude, if it is not more, then not even less than playa Norte beach and I have pictures to prove that. I ll write about that in the separate review.
So we started our scooty and we came to see Playa Centro beach, another side of the island, near to Playa Norte. And it was good. We decided to go in the water, like playa Norte you cannot go much deep into the water here as there was a restriction in form of rope in the water and you were not supposed to cross that. But the water was clear, up to 5-6 feet it was waist height, no harsh water, we enjoyed here. We rented an umbrella and reclining chairs and had our time. Here you can go to any restaurant nearby its beach, unlike Playa Norte where you are bound to eat from where you...
