Arena México — Attraction in Mexico City

Attended this with a friend who's been to a Lucha Libre on her previous visit to Mexico and recommended we go on our last night in the city. I had a ball of a time! Remember that everything is scripted and staged in the show, so don't expect high-class A grade movie action type things, come with an open mind and lots of energy as you'll be amped up by the crowds' cheers and jeers!

To get in the spirit of the occasion, I purchased a Luchador mask at the Mercado de Coyoacan for just 95 pesos earlier that day. Upon arrival to the Arena you will see a few queues, make sure you join the right one. We found it was really easy just purchasing at the door when you arrived. Ignore the scalpers who try and sell you outside the Arena.

We went on a Sunday and got there at 5pm, the line moved pretty quickly. If you don't speak Spanish make sure you take a picture of the ticket tiers that flash on the TV screen so you can easily show the ticket counter which tier you want to purchase (in the pic I attached I circled the tier in red for ease of the ticket attendant to see which I was referring to, as it might get hard for them to see from behind the glass). We got the 230 pesos per person ticket which seated us close enough to the ring to see everything but not too close to be mixed up in the action. Don't forget to have some pesos ready to tip the usher who shows you to your seat, we gave our usher 10 pesos.

Come with a full belly and only buy drinks when in the arena, there were lots of servers walking around and they'll take your drinks to you when you order. We saw potato chips going for 50 pesos so not worth the splurge for snacks. You're not allowed to bring food and drinks inside too, even water so take note.

The show lasts around 2 hours, after it's done, just Uber your way home as the venue is in a grittier part...

I highly recommend coming here during your trip, you won't regret it. I'm Mexican and I came here for the first time with my family. You can see on the screen what they are putting on national TV, if you get lucky they'll put you on TV. When you enter they will check your bag and give you a pat down. Cameras are not allowed and will have to be put in a room of cubbies on the left to the entrance, you'll get a number so hold on to that to get your things back when you leave. They have bathrooms on the right to the entrance. The snacks and drink are right past the entrance before you get into the arena. They have many options that you'll probably be happy with. Getting into the arena you will be seated so I recommend to get there early so you won't miss anything. I think the view from any spot will be good but we sat in the bottom section and I thought the view was great! There are vendors going around during the whole event selling beer, chips, drinks, food, and popcorn. The chairs don't have armrests and the drinks come in cups with no lids so be aware that someone might accidentally spill something on you and make sure to only get as many snacks as you can hold. Also be aware that it is a very loud place so if you bring kids maybe take some soundproof headphones. Outside of the arena they sell masks, costumes, and other souvenirs. Even if you don't understand Spanish you'll be able to go along with the crowd in cheering and yelling. When you're done here there are several restaurants around the area where you can wait for an uber. Definitely come...

“Las luchas”, como se le denomina comúnmente a este deporte mezcla de pantomima, gimnasia olímpica y lucha grecorromana, ha estado envuelto en un halo de misterio que cautiva aún ahora en plena era de los superhéroes y los efectos especiales por inteligencia artificial, la imaginación de grandes y chicos.

Hace pocos años mi hijo que vive en Canadá me encargó comprara las máscaras de luchadores tan famosos como El Santo, Blue Demon, y Octagon, nombres que ya son leyenda en el colectivo de todo un continente y que han trascendido allende el Atlántico y el Pacifico.

Hasta dónde es verdad y hasta dónde es pantomima las escaramuzas que preparan con tanta teatralidad las y los luchadores sobre el ring?

Es difícil saberlo. Lo que es cierto es que los lances desde lo alto de las cuerdas y las caídas son reales. Claro que los intercambios espectaculares de golpes y de “desmayos” y “pérdidas del sentido” fingidos se compensan con el encanto de las rutinas que solo los muy experimentados logran impactar en el ánimo de los aficionados a este deporte de las caídas y los vuelos, que incluso terminan fuera del ring y más allá hasta los asientos de “ring side”!

RUDOS versus TÉCNICOS.

Esta clasificación ha sido utilizada para separar a los luchadores que no respetan las reglas de la caballerosidad y las que impone el Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre, al atacar a su adversario de manera alevosa y contraviniendo inclusive las órdenes del Referí o Árbitro de la contienda. Los Rudos serán siempre”los malos” y los Técnicos “los buenos”, estos últimos ataviados generalmente de colores blancos, dorados y azules claros, mientras que aquellos de colores oscuros, generalmente en negro.

MÁSCARAS contra MÁSCARAS (o contra Cabellera).

El uniforme del luchador puede incluir máscaras y capas, esto último colabora en las mentes infantiles a crear la fantasía completa del súper héroe (o Super Villano) volador Salvador.

En ocasiones lo anterior se utiliza para avivar la atención del Respetable Público, cuando se anuncia que un luchador expondrá su Máscara ante otro. De perder, el vencedor “arrancará” la máscara del perdedor, revelando al mundo su Identidad Secreta. Y similar si pierde la cabellera. Que de manera inconsciente relacionaremos con el cuento de Sansón y Dalila, cuyo poder del hombre radicaba en su melena.

De esta suerte “Las Luchas” en México han tenido y enfrentado todo género de vicisitudes a lo largo de su existencia de más de 100 años: desde la creencia de que es “puro cuento” hasta la satanizacion de las “buenas conciencias”, y los accidentes que realmente sufren los luchadores en el Desempeño de su trabajo.

En mi humilde opinión, estos trabajadores del ring deben ser respetados y apoyados, ya que en principio son atletas de muy alto desempeño y los que realmente son disciplinados, pueden ser un ejemplo de pundonor y deportivismo que influyan de manera positiva en la niñez mexicana.
