Unveiling History's Secrets: A Journey through The Hague's Prison Gate Museum

Nestled within the heart of The Hague, the Prison Gate Museum stands as a testament to centuries of intriguing history and cultural richness. Our visit to this captivating museum was an illuminating journey through the annals of time, offering a glimpse into the city's past that left us both mesmerized and enlightened.

Stepping through the imposing gates, we were transported back in time to an era of justice, punishment, and intrigue. The museum's meticulously curated exhibits vividly depicted the different facets of prison life, from interrogation to torture and punishment. Each room unveiled layers of history, shedding light on the methods and practices employed throughout the ages.

Of particular interest were the interrogation rooms, where visitors could immerse themselves in the tense atmosphere of past investigations. The displays provided insights into the techniques used to extract information, offering a sobering reminder of the complexities of justice in times gone by.

Equally compelling were the sections dedicated to torture and punishment, where vivid descriptions and artifacts brought to life the harsh realities faced by prisoners. From gruesome implements to haunting tales of confinement, these exhibits served as poignant reminders of the human cost of crime and punishment.

Our experience at the Prison Gate Museum was enriched by the knowledgeable staff, who eagerly shared insights and anecdotes, further enhancing our understanding of the exhibits. Their passion for preserving and sharing the city's history was palpable, adding depth and authenticity to our visit.

In conclusion, the Prison Gate Museum is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to delve into The Hague's rich tapestry of history and culture. With its evocative exhibits, intriguing artifacts, and engaging staff, it offers a captivating journey through time that leaves a lasting impression. Whether a local resident or a curious traveler, a visit to this museum is sure to inspire, educate, and intrigue.

So--Ok, first things first, I feel like an absolute idiot--I did NOT look this up ahead of time, which you obviously are as you're reading this review. I was like "oh, prison gate museum! Ok! Gates! Ironwork! Cool! Ok!" NOPE. IT WAS NOT THAT. I'd classify it as a torture museum. I kept walking through, like, "WHERE ARE THE GATES. ARE THEY IN THE NEXT ROOM??" There were no gates; only torture. I had to leave and get a very bougie coffee because I am a soft girl and could not handle it. HOWEVER. It was very well done. It was informative without being a spectacle--there was no glorification of the torture or, like, depictions of it--etc. Anyway. It was a lot. Don't go here if you're not into that sort of thing. Don't go here for the gates. The museum itself deserves this five-star rating. It is not the museum's fault that I am staring into space, still highly disturbed six hours...

I never thought I would be so well received in prison in The Hague, starting with the sweet and beautiful lady at the reception and not forgetting all the helpfull and nice staff at the Museum of Gevangenpoort. Don't get me wrong but I wouldn't want to spend the night there even if I am giving Gevangenpoort 5 stars! As soon as I entered the reception I was immediately identified by the nice lady who warmly welcomed us making us feel strangely comfortable to the point I was confused by such politeness and friendliness...in a prison! It was a wounderfull surprise, never though I would learn new things in jail and I even got the chance to sentence someone to death! I am guilty, I was branded (in the heart!), I want to comeback to Gevangenpoort!

"The Prison Gate was originally an entrance gate to the castle of the Counts of Holland, built in medieval times. For many years after, it served as a prison to the Court of Holland. Nowadays the museum tells the story of crime and punishment across the centuries." The museum is very well preserved. When I visited the prisoner cells, I had the feeling that I travelled back in time. The museum provides valuable information about the judicial processes in history. I did not know that there are special cells for wealthy people, like a hotel room😃 There are even interactive settings, for example, by pushing a button, you can act as a judge and try to decide on a verdict! I really enjoyed my visit.
