This is definitely a trip to take. In fact it’s two trips because there’s the catamaran voyage and the exploration of the glow worm cave. The boat is fast and the voyage takes 25 minutes each way. The cabin is comfortable and has large windows which provide great views of the mountains and side fjord. I recommend you go for a window seat on the left-hand/port side on the outward leg to see the coast unfolding. However, if the weather’s ok and you don’t mind bring windswept, travelling on the top gives panoramic views. I took most of these photos from the small rear quarterdeck because there’s shelter from the elements and you’re not shooting through glass. Our commentary was by Ryan and was both informative and delivered well with a light touch. On arrival at the glow worm caves there’s a safety briefing then the passengers are divided into groups of twelve. The first groups go off leaving the remainder to listen to a presentation about the glow worms before going into the caves. (The first groups have this presentation once their tour has finished). By chance we had the glow worm presentation first and I’m glad we did. It provided the context for what we were about to see in real life. We were also lucky in having Coleman as our guide. He took us through the glow worm slide/video show with a dry sense of humour and answered questions authoritatively. I won’t say much about the tour itself as the element of surprise is important to the enjoyment of it. However I can assure you it’s magical. It’s forbidden to take photos underground, but as we were the last group we were permitted to take a few as we excited without disturbing the glow worms. During the brief wait for the return boat we had a stroll along the nature trail and saw an arrow-shaped variety of palm which was new to us. Very good value at NZ$99 per adult.

I recently took the Te Anau Glowworm Caves Tour and had a mixed experience in the beginning. On one hand, the tour itself was very well-organized and the guide was excellent. The tour guide did a great job of keeping everyone on track and ensuring that we didn't miss anything important. I appreciated how they repeatedly reminded us to put away our phones and cameras to fully appreciate the glowworms, which was very considerate. In my group, I had those tourists that kept taking photos and it was very frustrating for everyone. However, the initial wait to get on the boat was quite long and uncomfortable. We were directed to queue outside for almost 30 minutes in the hot sun, which was not ideal. It would have been better if there was some shade or a more comfortable waiting area. Once we were inside the cave, it was breathtakingly beautiful. The glowworms were stunning and the tour guide provided a lot of interesting information about the history and geology of the caves. The tour itself was smooth and well-paced, and we had plenty of time to take in the sights. Despite the initial wait, I would still recommend the Te Anau Glowworm Caves Tour to anyone interested in unique natural wonders. The effort that the tour guide put into ensuring that everyone had a great experience was much appreciated, and the glowworms themselves were truly unforgettable.

I initially booked my visit to the Te Anau Glowworm Caves on October 26, but due to heavy rain, the tour was canceled. Thankfully, I decided to rebook just before returning home on October 28, and it turned out to be the best decision! This experience is truly special compared to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, as it involves a scenic ferry ride to reach the caves. During the trip, the crew member was incredibly friendly and took the time to introduce us to the beautiful Garden Island. I learned about the fascinating takahe birds that inhabit the island, which added an extra layer of enjoyment to the adventure. The cave experience itself was also unique. I was amazed to see the strong and pure waters flowing inside the caves, enhancing the natural beauty all around. Once inside, I was blown away by the glowworms; it felt as if I could reach out and touch them—they were so close! The staff was kind and informative, making the entire experience even more enjoyable. Overall, this was a wonderful experience in Te Anau, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable adventure!

Glowworm tour here in Te Anau definitely worth your time for spending a few hours. We have attended the tour currently operated by Real Journeys, and the overall trip was amazing. The tour started with a 30 minutes boat ride towards the entry point, and you can enjoy the fjord views along the ride. All the people on board were separated into several groups to prevent crowdedness. After a short trail walk and brief introduction, you will be guided towards the cave and enjoy a fascinating tour of wonder orchestrated by Mother Nature. Photoshoot inside the cave is not allowed to protect the environment and make sure glowworms are not to be disturbed. You will have to use your bare eyes to witness the amazing view and respect nature at the same time. When finished, we were invited to complimentary coffee and drinks as well as a short video course showing the lifecycle and habitats of the glowworms before heading to the boat for a ride back to Te Anau downtown. The tour takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes, and I do believe it's indeed a worthwhile experience here in Te Anau.

A must do in Te Anau. They have a morning and afternoon tour. The tour starts with a 30 min boat ride to the cave. Then the group are divided to smaller group each with no more than 12 people with 1 guide. Our guide Harry (not Harry Up) and skipper Daniel was very knowledgeable and we felt very safe inside the cave. Inside the cave, there is a 5-10 min walk are all on top of steel path. Then the magical moment is the boat ride. Its pitch dark but the grow worms made you feel like you have entered into another universe. After the tour, there was a short video presentation as well as free tea and coffee inside the hut. No photos are allowed inside due to safety reasons which are understandable but my suggestion is to have a small designated area for people taking photo as a memory. Overall a very good experience and the beautiful scenery of Lake Te Anau from the boat in itself is worth the 2.5 hour drive from Queenstown. Booking is highly recommended as the tour fill up quickly especially on the weekend and during school holidays.

A most enjoyable trip across from Te Anau, skipper Josie and commentator Zane made it interesting and fun. We were then taken into the cave by, I think, Sophie (?) who certainly knew her stuff. I've done a glowworm cave before in North Island but those were quite high up - from the 12-seater boat inside the cave the glowworms seemed very close indeed. Excitingly powerful waterfall, and Emma the Eel was there too. Our guide was very clear about no photos and being silent - it would have been so magical had a three-year-old(?) not kept jabbering. But that's what three-year-olds do, you can't stop them. I therefore think that the company should seriously consider age suitability, maybe a strong word or even edict - no under 5s? I would have been much happier without the very young children. Otherwise a much recommended trip.

Description
The Te Ana-au caves are a culturally and ecologically important system of limestone caves on the western shore of Lake Te Anau, in the southwest of New Zealand. They were re-discovered in 1948 by Lawson Burrows, who found the upper entry after three years of searching, following clues in old Māori legends.
