Karaka Cafe stands out not only for its exceptional culinary offerings and cozy atmosphere but also for its heartfelt ode to Maori culture, which enriches the dining experience with a unique cultural essence. The cafe artfully incorporates Maori traditions and aesthetics into its design, menu, and overall ethos, offering guests an immersive experience that goes beyond mere dining.

Upon entering, one is immediately struck by the tasteful decor that pays homage to Maori heritage, featuring traditional artwork and motifs that celebrate the rich history and artistry of New Zealand's indigenous people. This cultural tribute extends to the menu, where you can find dishes inspired by traditional Maori cuisine, thoughtfully adapted to suit modern palates. Ingredients native to New Zealand are used creatively, providing a taste experience that is both authentic and innovative.

Karaka Cafe’s commitment to honoring Maori culture, combined with its delicious food, exquisite coffee, and warm atmosphere, makes it a truly unique and must-visit destination. It's a place where guests can not only indulge in delightful culinary creations but also connect with and appreciate the rich tapestry of Maori culture, making each visit a memorable and enlightening experience.

The staff there is gold. My friends and I visited yesterday around 3. They were very lenient with the lunch times (even though we didn’t get any) When we ordered our food we had a TON of different questions for the lovely server which we assume was newer. Sorry for bombarding! He answered them all the best he could. We got the pulled pork and chips, raw fish and chicken burger. My two friends mentioned they both really enjoyed their food! We also bought coffee which the bartender made extremely well. He was extremely friendly, made all of us feeling amazing while we leave. Also have to mention another one of their staff, he was truly a ray of light towards us. Seriously hospitable, kind, attentive. Towards the end our group just stayed 10 minutes after just chatting with the friendly man. I would come back just to experience an amazing hospitality staff!

Sadly I do want to mention the Chicken Burger was not the best dish. Bread was dry, even having sauce on it. It would crumble apart very easily. The piece of chicken wasn’t something to rave about..

However I’m coming back to try other things on the menu and to enjoy the environment and...

After a beautiful walk around Wellington waterfront with my visiting mother, the lovely setting of Karaka Cafe seemed inviting.

We we're greated quickly and seated at a nice table outside. Self ordering from the QR code menu was easy enough but we couldn't help notice the waiter who seated us, was just standing around and seemed weird that there was no interaction to take orders or offer further service, water etc.

Any how, after scanning the QR code, our drinks and order came out reasonably quickly but this is where the disappointment began. We ordered the whitebait sandwhich, which had dry bread, a poor whitebait to egg ratio, flooded with dressing, drowning the whitebait flavor. Calamari, tasted mega fishy and chewy to eat. Fried chicken, over saturated in oil. Our chips were undercooked and stodgy. The best dish was the chicken burger which seemed reasonably balanced even with a similar over saturated fried chicken filling.

All in al for the price it was well under par, luckily the location and outdoor seated area made up for the average food.

I'd love to say we would go back but sadly it probably won't...

$36 for brunch felt too expensive, especially with the food quality look at my egg benedict what the helly 😭 imagine you waited an hour for gorge egg benedict and got this haha.. so i asked for a new one felt a bit sorry.. We waited an hour for our meals, and even the two tables next to us were asking when their food was coming. Definitely some issues with getting dishes out. I don’t mind waiting a bit, but an hour was too much. I was hoping to enjoy good food and a yapping w your company in the sunshine but it turned into just chatting while waiting On top of that, I added $6 sausage and $6 baked beans, which were forgotten from my dish. When they finally brought them out, it was literally one piece of sausage for $6. The add ons felt overpriced compared to what you actually get. the customer service was amazing though the staff were friendly and wholesome, which made the experience better. The location is also perf with a great waterfront atmosphere! If you’re after a spot with good vibes and views, it’s worth a visit. But compared with other Wellington cafes, it didn’t feel worth the price for the food.
