Located in Civic Square, the Gallery is recognised as pivotal to Wellington’s positioning and growth as New Zealand’s arts capital. City Gallery Wellington plays a unique role in the New Zealand's cultural landscape. The gallery mounts a changing programme of exhibitions and does not have a collection. City Gallery Wellington re-opened in September 2009 after a year's closure for renovations. Three new gallery spaces were added, including one devoted to the exhibition of Maori and Pacific art, plus a new auditorium. The additions were designed by Wellington architect Stuart Gardyne of Architecture+. In 2018, the gallery’s entrance was remodeled to improve access.

City Gallery Wellington is a dynamic cultural presence in the capital city of Aotearoa New Zealand, showcasing contemporary art from New Zealand and around the world. It is a venue for the research, display and debate about modern and contemporary visual art. Art nourishes our souls. It has magical properties. It uplifts and transports our spirits. It fires our imaginations, sparking new ways to see the world and to think about how we occupy it. City Gallery works collaboratively with artists, galleries, collectors, and an extensive range of organisations and business partners to present exhibitions and events that are relevant to our lives today, test art’s boundaries, and challenge us. City Gallery’s activities are designed to nurture curiosity in the ideas explored within...

One of the most impressive things about the City Gallery Wellington is its dedication to showcasing thought-provoking exhibits that are unique. The gallery is known for its cutting-edge contemporary art, and you can always expect to see something innovative and inspiring on display.

What I appreciate most about the City Gallery Wellington is its commitment to diversity and inclusivity. The gallery actively seeks out works from a wide range of artists, from various backgrounds and perspectives, and this is reflected in the exhibits. Whether you are interested in painting, sculpture, installation, or video art, you are sure to find something that speaks to you at the City Gallery Wellington.

Another thing that sets this gallery apart is its willingness to take risks and showcase works that might be considered controversial or challenging. This approach leads to some truly compelling exhibits that push boundaries and invite visitors to think deeply about the issues and ideas explored in the art.

Overall, I highly recommend a visit to the City Gallery Wellington for anyone interested in contemporary art. The exhibits are always thought-provoking, unique, and engaging, and the gallery itself is a beautiful space that provides an excellent backdrop for the art. Whether you are a seasoned art lover or just starting to explore the world of contemporary art, you are sure to find something to captivate your imagination at the City...

City Gallery has a great theatre and several exhibition rooms, plus shop / shop-front and is centrally located within the Wellington Civic Square. It is close to the waterfront, Michael Fowler Centre, transport and eateries around Cuba and Victoria Streets. Entrance is free so that is a bonus for visitors checking out the various art exhibitions held during the year.

On 7/6/2019 Victoria University and Confucius Institute Wn, held their Wellington regional, mandarin competitions for schools and tertiary students, with awards given to the first 3 winners in each category. These winners get to travel to China on free scholarships to participate in the International Mandarin Competitions held later in the year. Congratulations to all the winners! The organisers did a great job hosting and catering for the event. The participants turned out in record numbers this year and were impressive with their proficient grasp of mandarin.

On the catering front Nikau Cafe did an excellent job with their delicious lunch which had a subtle, Asian Fusion twist and afternoon tea cakes. They also provided a wide range of beverages and cold drinks for the many attendees present. The staff was most efficient with service which was delivered with impeccable etiquette. The event was a huge success for everyone present and especially for the...

This iconic gallery in the centre of Wellington caters to all artistic tastes and while it's one of many quality galleries in the capital it's expansive rooms allow artists and their collections to speak to the space and therefore to express the message of the work in a way some smaller galleries can't. The cute souvenir shop and popular (Nikau) Cafe are an added bonus within this historical building.
