Leaving from the amazing Dunedin Station, I had the chance to ride both The Inlander (morning) and The Seasider (afternoon) as they were both running on the same day. It’s a great way to enjoy some of Dunedin’s beautiful natural landscapes not easily accessible otherwise. The Inlander includes a stop at Hinton where passengers can hop off and stretch their legs while the locomotive was re-orientated for the return trip. For The Seasider, it stops at a certain point during the journey before the locomotive is re-set for the journey back to Dunedin. Refreshments are available on board both services. Darryl, our guide on both trips, provided commentary sharing points of interest along each journey. He, along with the rest of the crew, were friendly and available for assistance at boarding and throughout the journey. I enjoyed both trips. However, if I had to choose one, I would recommend The Seasider as I found travelling along the coastline was more picturesque. Even if you don't plan on taking a trip, consider visiting Dunedin Station which is a beautiful historical building. The exterior was being renovated when I was there. However, the interior was open and worth having a look around.

One of the fancier buildings in Dunedin. Its located close to the Octagon, just find Stuart street and head down towards the water. The court house and old prison is across the street and it is down the road from the settlers museum. The gardens in the front is maintained well so its a nice place to sit and relax while you look at the building itself. Both inside and outside of the building is nice. The inside has a lot of the old decor including the old ticketing booths and the stained glass windows at the top. The first floor also houses a sports hall of fame and an arts museum. There is a ticketing area on the ground floor to do rail tours around the area. The tracks behind the station are still functional. Quite a nice stop for some sightseeing.

Arrived at the wonderful station and caught the tourist trip to Pukerangi through the Taieri Gorge. Some grand scenery and some wonderful engineering with the viaducts and bridges clinging to the side of the gorge. We were able to park near the station for free because it was the Easter Holiday. Even if you don't take the rail trip, you must at least visit the station. It is fabulous. There are other trips by rail, along the coast going North and a longer trip going the same way through Pukerangi to Middlemarch. The Middlemarch trip does not operate everyday.

The building looks nice. It's not far from the Octagon. You can do two different tourist train trips. I did both and recommend the Taieri Gorge trip if you can spare the time and money. There is some great landscapes to see outside of Dunedin. After this trip though, the Seasider felt a little bit boring overall. Bring a camera. You can stand on the platforms between the carriages for most of the ride. If you can choose the day, don't do the same mistake that I did: everyone wants to do the trip on a Sunday.

Taieri Gorge railway ride is superb. Like the Dunedin railway station, the train bogies appeared quite traditional and reminded of the Gold-rush period for which the track was built. The ride is very exciting and thrilling. The deep gorges, the Taieri river, tunnels and many via ducts, gave the wonderful feeling. The mountains cladded with yellow flowers had a golden hue. Equally good was the narration .. we learnt a lot about Dunedin and a larger picture of Otago region. Nice and satisfying experience.

We did not go onto the railway but visited the train station in Dunedin as it is touted as a must-see. The exterior of the train station is spectacular. Upon entering, we found the main hall unexpectedly small compared to the grandness of the exterior. The train hall is nicely decorated with mosaic floor and spectacular ornamented ceiling. The museum of New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame is located upstairs at the train station. It is a must-see for people who are into architecture.
