Skopje Fortress, also known as Kale Fortress, is a historic landmark situated on a hill overlooking the city of Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia. This fortress has played a significant role in the region's history, serving as a strategic military stronghold and witnessing various civilizations and empires over the centuries. The origins of Skopje Fortress date back to the 6th century during the Byzantine period, although the site has seen multiple phases of construction and renovation under different rulers, including the Romans, Bulgarians, Serbs, and Ottomans. The fortress underwent major expansions and fortifications during the Ottoman era, becoming a prominent defensive structure in the region. Skopje Fortress is characterized by its massive stone walls, towers, and gates, which reflect a mix of architectural styles from different historical periods. The fortress offers commanding views of the surrounding landscape and was strategically positioned to control trade routes and protect the city from invaders. In addition to its military significance, Skopje Fortress has cultural and archaeological importance. Excavations within the fortress have uncovered remnants of ancient buildings, artifacts, and traces of previous settlements, providing insights into Skopje's history and development. Today, Skopje Fortress is a popular tourist attraction and a symbol of Skopje's heritage. Visitors can explore the fortress grounds, walk along the fortified walls, and enjoy panoramic views of the city and the Vardar River below. The fortress also hosts cultural events, exhibitions, and concerts, further enriching its role as a cultural hub in Skopje. In recent years, efforts have been made to preserve and promote Skopje Fortress as part of North Macedonia's cultural heritage, ensuring that this historic site continues to be appreciated and enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

It's worth visiting, as the view is really nice and you can see the whole city of Skopje. It is not kept in a good condition, but you can walk until the final spot, which has the best view. There is no entrance fee. !!! BE CAREFUL not to leave valuable things inside the car. We left the car at the parking lots in front of the entrance for less than 20 minutes and we found it with a broken window and without our laptops. There is a Security Officer but he is most a kind of a joke as I found him lying down, ready to fall asleep and of course he told that had seen nothing. So, even if it's your final stop before leaving the city, leave your valuable things in your hotel and go back to get them.

Standing high on top of a creek above the old albanian quarter of the city, overseeing meanders of the Vardar river, the Kale fortress is one of the most prominent landmarks of the city. The original structure was built by the Emperor Justinian, however the walls and tower you can see today, date back only to the 10th century. And even so, there is not much left from the fortress anyway. The surrounding walls provide however probably the best view of the historic center. Just don't expect any fancy western-style castle. The area in between the walls is not well preserved and sometimes looks like a bit of a jungle. It has its own character though.

Must visit. Lots of history. And free! (For now at least). It’s a shame that politics are keeping this place from reaching its full potential and attracting even more people. There was some effort 6 years ago and they made great progress and then just stopped. Regardless, get a tour guide and hear about all the history. It’s inexpensive and worth it. There’s parking available, but it’s close to the Old Bazaar and can easily walk to it. Great open space for kids to run around too. Wish everyone would be respectful and take their trash out with them. Attached picture of the view from one side.

As a history maniac I, personally, find places like this to be intimatelly connected with and valuing it's place in human history. This particular fortress is built later than ot seems, 6th century, but the place was a home to people 6 milleniums ago (around 4th century BC). As a fun fact, in this fortress the coronation of Stefan Uroš IV Dušan was performed. He was known as Dušan mighty and he was the emperror of Serbs, Bulgarians, Greeks and Albanians. There is not much left of original structures in within fortress walls but it is still a must see place.

Really beautiful place to visit in the old town of Skopje! The Skopje Fortress is a historic monument located in the center of the municipality and located at the highest point of the city overlooking the Vardan River! You can see the whole city of Skopje from the Fortress! The Fortress is thought to have been built during the rule of the emperor Justinian I and reconstructed further during the 10th century! It really reflects the art and the sculpture of ancient Macedonia! I highly recommend you to visit this monument when you Visit Skopje!
