We did this coming from a cruise ship, and its a great choice for a workout plus seeing the town from a great vista.
Its a flat mile from the cruise dock to the start of the hike. You go thru the business district, its all very nice and safe. There are many small roads but its not hard to get to the hike start.
From the building which is the lower station of the funicular (tram), walk past it toward the mountain. Here there is a tight neighborhood road that switchbacks up the mountain, with stairs in the middle occasionally if you want a steeper, but shorter route. Head on up and after climbing a couple of hundred vertical feet, the paved road then stays flat and the official start of the hike begin on a 'trail' the size of a one lane dirt road. This switchbacks its way to the top under the cover of trees, with a consistent ~10% grade.
You come out slightly above the upper funicular station, walk over to it for great vista points. The top is a start of a flatter forested area which has lots of tiny trails crisscrossing the area. I'd recommend at least walking to the Skomakerdiket, which is a small lake in the trees.
On the way down you have two choices.....the way you came up or the other side (to the left of the funicular when facing the city from the top). We did the left to make a loop, and it was a mix of paved road, steep rocky trail, and more paved road thru neighborhoods. It's nice to make it a loop, but it really was not that interesting, so I'd recommend going down the way you came up.
As for distances, its a flat mile to the funicular lower tram station, 2.7mi/1,300ft elevation gain to the top. Adding the lake adds about 2/3rds of a mile with minimal elevation. Going down the left side adds...
Read moreGo early- before the cruise ships show up. I went 15 minutes after they opened on a Sunday and there was no line. I walked to the lake and literally had it to myself- so peaceful and quiet. On the walk back the cruise ship groups showed up, clogging the trails and being more interested in their phones than the beautiful landscape around them.
I walked the trail back down to the city- it is a solid 40 minutes. Not particularly difficult as it's packed down gravel, railings, and not many steep spots. It is a long walk however and the slope wears out...
Read moreHighly recommended! A must go hike if you are in Bergen. DO NOT miss it. You can either take the cable car or hike. But a hike is always better. Spectacular views of the Bergen city from the top and along the way. The hike is really nice and not that hard. No highly steep areas. But the whole hike is uphill You go in the forest along with a river.
Bring your food and everything. You need to be careful in some places during the hike, especially in the winter, it can...
