Ekebergparken is an excellent city park to get some outdoor exercise, view cultural displays (sculptures, display art), and enjoy the wonderful vistas of Oslo and its inner fjord. Trails are well laid out (mostly gravel with some steps) in a thin wooded area. We entered the park at Konowsgate (near Paul McCarthy's unfortunate "art"), which is 2.2km from our accom just north of Oslo S (fascinating varied cultural communities along the Gronland route). Soon after the entrance, we passed the Huldra scupture and took the left fork up the hill to Munchpunket. A bit of huff and puff to that point, but a few locals were running up and down the trail with much less exertion. We proceeded further up the hill to the Klang exhibit. From Klang, many other art displays and trails, but we headed over to the views at Ekebergutsikten and the impressive Chloe art -- a flat optical illusion of a female head. Great views there and nearby Kongsveien road of the city and inner Oslo fjord. A trail back down the hill begins at Ekebergutsikten and returned us to our original entrance.
My favorite “tourist” activity in Oslo, a great way to spend a sunny or drizzly Sunday afternoon. I especially loved the James Turrell light exhibit – our guide was genuinely nice, and the experience was unique and unexpected. Free on Sundays if you book online in advance (or drop by and see if they can squeeze you in). The fog exhibit is also exceptionally cool – it’s scheduled at certain times, so check in at the friendly visitor’s center when you arrive. Other sculptures were interesting too, you’ll find things that strike your fancy and a few that make you say “huh” – different for everyone - just by wandering around. Lots of wooded trails, open spaces and viewpoints, great for couples, families and solo travellers. Fantastic off-the-beaten-path tourist spot in Oslo.
If there’s one thing you do while visiting Oslo, it’s definitely this. The Nordic Pixel Forest is the 46th artwork installed permanently in the sculpture park. It is one of several site-specific works of art in the park’s collection, which consists of works from both international and Norwegian artists. Nordic Pixel Forest is also the largest and most comprehensive artistic project the park has done since its opening in 2013. It is the second artwork by Pipilotti Rist in Ekebergparken’s collection. Her first installation in the park, Nordic Hiplights, was installed in 2022. A wonderful day for friends, family and couples. Savour the views and forest air.
A great place for a walk to look into yourself and become one with nature and time. There are numerous signs with the information on how this place came to be and what its story is. My favorite part is about the prehistoric shoreline and "Mesolithic climb", where you're climbing a steep passage looking and touching the rocks which are more than five thousand years old and enjoying the breathtaking vista of the city below you. There are a couple of cafes and a restaurant, a parking place and a well situated tram stop (routes 19 and 13). Would recommend.
