Visited this place today around 3 pm. It's open till 5 pm. Tickets were 100kr each. However, student tickets are available for 70kr per person. We were given a locker to leave our belongings prior to checking the museum. There are 4 floors on this musem. First floor is comprised of ancient Norwegian artifacts and sculptures as well as the statue of Jesus on the cross. While arriving on the second floor, we noticed Egyptian historical artifacts which were truely amazing. There was even a mumi. You could also see some historical gold coins. On the third floor, we saw the world's oldest rune stone. This was truely fascinating. Make sure you check it out. Now to the fourth floor. This floor was my favourite. It had fantastic samurai swords and figurings and artifacts from Japan. Everything was displayed flawlessly. I've added some photos of this experience, make sure to check them out. Overall, I'd give this museum a 9 out of 10 rating. Staff were very friendly, and place was clean and everything was explained with the greatest detail in both English and Norwegian languages. However, I deduct 1 point because of the amount of noise from kids messing about. I had expected that the staff would tell them to stop messing and running in the place just to keep the noise down. But that didn't happen.

Kulturhistorisk Museum is a big museum located in the centrum of Oslo. In this museum are presented several fascinating exhibitions concerning different periods and cultures. On the ground floor, are presented interesting exhibitions concerning finds from Stone Age and Early Medieval Art. On the following floors, are presented coins, artefacts from ancient Egypt and exhibitions concerning different cultures and tribes of the North. What is interesting, on the last floor is presented newly opened exhibition concerning Viking Age. In white Art nouveau room are presented numerous showcases with well-known rich finds dated to this period, which were discovered in various parts of Norway. Moreover, in the separate room, we can learn more about the above-mentioned period and artefacts from multimedia presentations and films. In my opinion this museum, which its rich and fascinating exhibitions, is the perfect place to spend time and to learn more about the North (and not only).

Very well organized and thematically set exhibit areas. Has a great collection of artefacts ranging from clothing in various climatic conditions, rafts, armour, warriors protective gears, ancient swords, a small raft and a set of fancy metal items worn by men which I have witnessed here for first time ever and not available anywhere else I have visited. There is a section dedicated to the war/bravery medallions. I liked the huge collection of the gold coins and the walls made of the gold coins The museum is spanned over 3floors. One needs to plan for atleast 2-4 hours based on individual interests in olden artefacts. 1 section in ground floor dedicated to souveniers Entry included if you buy OSLO TICKET Easy access by walk from Oslo Castle and the theater. Public transport available upto theater Has toilet facility in mezzanine floor

Brilliant museum with exhibits that really like to make you think. I loved the exhibit on the History of gold and coinage and the temporary exhibition on norse folklore , cartographie , astronamy and taxonomy. I did however feel the exhibits relating to vikings were slightly lacking in stereotypical viking items but this was a minor issue. My main gripe is the museums exhibit on the arrival of man to present day norway has very unsafe flooring. I understand this IS intended to be themed as part of the exhibition but some plaques were very hard to read and as a result i often found myself tripping and occasionally nearly failing while trying to get slightly Closer or further from a plaque with text. However it was overall an Amazing museum to visit.

Classic Museum with confusing and underdeveloped exhibits. Lots of gold here (literally) but almost all the exhibits disappoint. It looks like they tend to build all exhibits around a single idea and then forget about the rest? For a historical museum, it seldom provides context. Instead it's full of (not all random) items and facts, so while you've seen lots, you cannot really remember much? It's too fragmented and unfocused to learn anything. Less than half the building is exhibits and 1/6th the space is a huge room for kids to play in. Overall, the museum offers tons of text, interactivity on the level of 20 year old web pages. Great artefacts on display, but not very engaging. Loved the temporary Samurai exhibit! Small, but very well made!

We arrived to the museum 1 hour before closing time, so a very friendly man at the ticket office told us that on that day they have something called "culture night" (something like the night of the museums we have in Poland once a year), so they were opening again their doors at 6pm and everyone could come see the exhibitions for free until 10 pm. We indeed came back at 6 and we saw all the exhibitions - we loved especially the one devoted to Vikings era. A highlight of the event was that you could even hold an 11th century Viking sword, which was pretty cool. There are also several artefacts related to stave churches, including several portals, sculptures and even a painted roof.
