My wife and I had a great time! We spent two hours that flew by so fast. Would recommend for anyone with an interest for history and/or vikings!
Good to know: 🎯 They offer a VR Game (where you shoot with a bow and arrow) that is a separate charge from the overall museum exhibit. We opted for the combo and did both.
🤩 The VR game is solid (river sequence is gorgeous) and well worth your time if you like games.
😍 The exhibit has lots of different experiences, ranging from holographic Vikings (our favorite) to beautiful videos depicting Viking life. You could tell a lot of work went into the production of these.
✅️ Free wifi!
⚜️ Probably the best souvenirs in Oslo. The gift shop is super high quality with reindeer furs and jewelry and fun toy swords for the kids. Excellent!
⏰️ Some things like the movies and VR experience has set times. The staff is super helpful and helped us plan our visit. We went from the intro movie to smaller exhibits to the VR Game before we finished with the VR experience and final movie.
🌌 The entire interior is next level!
🌍 Huge variety of languages available!
The only slight letdown was the VR experience (different from the aforementioned VR game) where you're wearing a headset and sitting in a chair. The chair has basic movements to simulate that you are sitting in a boat, but it's not utilized well.
Spoilers ahead;
I imagined plenty of exciting ways to use a VR headset, but none really came to pass.
I figured we might have a slightly exagerrated river ride or even on lots across land, or perhaps there would be a great storm through arctic water and ice bergs that ended in the discovery of Vinland. Heck, maybe we would have mythical elements like the Midgards serpent come to life around us thanks to a Skald. Or maybe we would participate in a larger feelt of ships, giving us a better look at how they operated.
Instead we got what I think was supposed to be a stealthy Viking raid where most of the ride was the ship quietly flosting down an archipelago. The leader kept shouting about being quiet which seemed a bit counterprodudictive.
I guess the ride was meant to build anticipation, but it fails to immerse you since; you dont know who these people are or what the stakes are. Why should you be invested in this crew? Are you cheering for them? Do you want their raid to succeed? Some friendly banter between the crew could have helped. Even hushed whispers as the crew prepares for the raid would have helped. Ive seen airline passengers with more camaraderie than this lot. the ambiance suggests its a stealth mission and want to immerse you, but the music is trying too hard, making it feel like you are watching a show rather than being there yourself. you are sitting in a very warm chair, but the scene looks super cold. Might be a summmer river cruise would be better. can we talk about why the guy is yelling about the crew being quiet? What gives? speaking of the crew; why arent they working together? They seem to all be in their own little worlds without much of a plan. Again; where are we going? when the fighting finally begins the crew immediately gets murdered by an enemy that seems to know they were coming. So much for a stealth mission. Guess the yelling gave them away. why end on a downer?
Its not all bad though; 🏆 the actors themselves and the graphics are great. The attention to detail in outfits follows the high quality of the rest of the experience. 🔥 The flaming arrows and the other ship crashing into yours was fantastic. 🏕 the initial intro around the fire works well and adds variety.
Let me stress one final time; the overall exhibit was a fantastic experience. Well worth the price. Super fun way to spend a few...
Read moreIt was our last day in Oslo and very spontaneously, we decided to visit the Viking Planet as the Viking Museum was closed. We bought our tickets and entered the museum. There is a movie you can watch with virtual reality headsets, which starts every 20min. A group had just ended their session when we arrived. We saw the time table, which indicated that the next session would start at 17. As we had some time until 17 we decided to look around. Exactly 16.58, we were at the entrance of the virtual reality show (everything is on the same floor by the way) and wanted to join in only to be harshly stopped by the staff member saying that she had already started with the introduction. We just stood there, confused, my husband telling her that it was not correct to start earlier than the scheduled time. And then the staff member lost herself. She yelled at us, trembling with fear and not listening to us. In the end, she told us to get our money back and disappear. We were so flabbergasted by this behaviour on our last day of a city where we‘ve only met super friendly people. The more we were trying to explain her the given time schedule the more furious she got and even was about to call the security. In the end, all we wanted was to leave. The calm poor lady, ashamed of the behaviour of her own staff member, at the desk helped us to get our money back. The furious staff member was still not in a stabile state to communicate, so we wanted to talk to her boss. She lied into our face saying that she was the boss. The other lady said that the boss is not around on Sundays. We do not know her name as she did not put on her name tag as all the other staff members. All in all, maybe the museum itself is interesting (in the short amount of time we only tried out some broken headsets with very bad sound quality), but such a morbid behaviour towards your guests - and especially when you are at fault - is just...

If you’re obsessed with Vikings (the TV show or the real ones), Norse mythology, or even Game of Thrones, then The Viking Planet is an absolute gem! 🤩 This interactive museum will transport you back in time with its fantastic VR experience—seriously, it’s like stepping onto a Viking ship. 🛶
The highlight? A virtual tour of the Viking Ship Museum, which is a lifesaver since it’s currently closed for repairs (at the time of this review). The overall ticket price is quite reasonable, though the Viking VR game—where you get to battle like a true Norse warrior—does cost a bit extra. Still, it’s absolutely worth every krone! 💪🔥
Pro Tip: Plan for at least 2 hours to soak it all in. The immersive experience and fun activities make it an incredible value. 🪓
A massive THANK YOU to the incredible staff—Olivia, Elliotte, and Erica (hope I got your names right!). You were so friendly, full of smiles, and your energy made my last evening in Oslo unforgettable. ❤️✨
