Having lived in the Middle East for 10 years and having visited the best museums in London, New York and Moscow, I have to admit, we entered this museum in Muscat with curiosity rather than expectations. But it really surprised us. The museum has 4 parts: Oman - land of contrasts, Oman through time, the diversity of Oman's wildlife, and the whale hall. It boasts a rich collection of fossils, desert animals, shells and marine mammals. The highlights of the collection are a full size skeleton of a sperm whale and a 260 mln years old fossilized tree that is exhibited in front of the museum. The whale hall also plays recordings of whale and dolphin sounds. The exhibits are presented in an interactive way that is enticing for kids, some as quizzes, and even with a sense of humor. For example, they show the bones of a prey extracted from a pellet of an eagle. Overall it is a compact yet very interesting and well-done museum. Even if you do not read all the information on the walls (which is there in English and Arabic) you will learn a lot.

This museum is an amazing place for knowledge-seeking if interested in zoology and primitive science. They have amazing exhibits that showcase the diversity of Oman's environment across various regions. There are fossil exhibits dating back millions of years, and even dinosaur bones. The whale house is one section that one should not miss, where a full skeleton system is on display a Sperm Whale. Tickets are 1 OMR, and parking spaces are available outside the museum. The museum is located within a complex of government office buildings, hence ask the gate person for directions.

Natural History are my most favourite kind of museums no matter where they are. This one is definitely smaller in size but humbly relevant to the region as their focus is to show the local variety rather than artefacts from around the world. Given Oman's dry hot climate, the animals found in the region are naturally very limited (mostly reptiles) but they do have loads of coral fossils from marine life and animal bones that are million years old. That is dinosaur kind of stuff.

This museum contains the history and evaluation of Flora and Fauna through the different eras. Museum isn't so big, but you'll get lot of knowledge looking at the artifacts. Stuffed animals they've used are really good. There's another room contains remainings of whales. You can even listen to different sounds make by whales. I recommend you to bring your kids to this place, it'll boost the knowledge of your kid. Ticket price is 1 riyal if you are an adult. And parking is free.
