Here I am deliberately writing this post in English. We visited natural history museum at Al khuwair, Muscat. It is located just near crossing of foot bridge and on beginning of vazirat street. The museum is well maintained. It gives nice information to children about the flora and fauna of Oman, of the Earth. Ticket is 1 riyal for expatriates and 0.5 riyal for Omanis . Timings are from 9 to 1. It is divided into three parts. The land, the animals and vegetation and whale museum. Outside part 4, botanical garden is also worth visiting . We saw meteorites, a piece of stone from Mars, rocks inside the sea, how mountains are formed in different parts of Oman. We saw animals actual. Dead and preserved filling chemical stuff looking as if in action. Animals in jungle, in deserts of Oman, near us etc. A crow is now an extinct bird here. It showed a crow also . It explained with actual cut legs and heads with beaks the different types of bird legs and beaks and how they use them. Big legs and body parts of actual dinosaur looking like brown stones were also on exhibit. Whale museum showed actual long, big skeleton of a whale. A jaw of a whale, a caracass of a dolphin, sea shells polished naturally, different stages of a sea shell etc. Outside, in botanical garden we saw our banyan tree with red ' teta ', some thorny trees, a tree whose secreted liquid , છાલ નો સ્ત્રાવ is used in scents and its drops are put on dhoop they use for worship. A must visit for children. They will get educative entertainment. We visited to show to...

The Natural History Museum of Oman, located in the Ministry of Heritage and Culture complex in Al Khuwair, Muscat, opened in December 1985 and offers a remarkable journey through the Sultanate’s natural heritage .

Its standout exhibit is the awe-inspiring Whale Hall, featuring the nearly complete skeleton of a sperm whale—14 meters long, weighing 3.5 tons—discovered stranded in Barka in 1986 . Throughout the museum, you’ll encounter carefully preserved specimens of indigenous mammals (like the Arabian leopard, Tahr, oryx, wolf), birds, reptiles, insects, and marine fossils—even ancient elephants and monkeys .

Upstairs, galleries explore Oman’s geological and environmental diversity—from mangroves and coral reefs to valleys, caves, and plant ecosystems—with clear and accessible displays . Some materials date back over 270 million years, including fossil reefs such as rudists .

The experience is compact yet rich—perfect for students, families, or curious travelers. Entry is affordable (around 500 baiza for adults and 200 baiza for kids aged 6–12) and children under six usually enter free . Visitors report that most displays are well organized and educational, with some noting the museum can be comfortably explored in under an hour .

In sum, while modest in size, Muscat’s Natural History Museum is a concentrated treasure trove—perfect for gaining insight into Oman’s biodiversity, geology, and environmental evolution in a single,...

Having lived in the Middle East for 10 years and having visited the best museums in London, New York and Moscow, I have to admit, we entered this museum in Muscat with curiosity rather than expectations. But it really surprised us. The museum has 4 parts: Oman - land of contrasts, Oman through time, the diversity of Oman's wildlife, and the whale hall. It boasts a rich collection of fossils, desert animals, shells and marine mammals. The highlights of the collection are a full size skeleton of a sperm whale and a 260 mln years old fossilized tree that is exhibited in front of the museum. The whale hall also plays recordings of whale and dolphin sounds. The exhibits are presented in an interactive way that is enticing for kids, some as quizzes, and even with a sense of humor. For example, they show the bones of a prey extracted from a pellet of an eagle. Overall it is a compact yet very interesting and well-done museum. Even if you do not read all the information on the walls (which is there in English and Arabic) you will learn a lot.

Natural History Museum of Oman was opened on 30 December 1985, located in the Ministry of heritage and culture in Al khuwair area. The Museum shows the Omani environment diversity through offers of terrain, geology, plants, insects, wild animals and marine life. Despite the small size of the Museum but abounding of facts dealing with biodiversity of the Sultanate of Oman. The Museum features stuffed animals rarely found in the wilds of types and species living in the land of Oman, skeletons of marine organisms, birds and reptiles lived in Omani environment and died naturally. This museum is an amazing place for knowledge-seeking if interested in zoology and primitive science. They have amazing exhibits that showcase the diversity of Oman's environment across various regions. There are fossil exhibits dating back millions of years, and even dinosaur bones. The whale house is one section that one should not miss, where a full skeleton system is on display a Sperm Whale. Tickets are 1 OMR, and parking spaces are available outside the museum. The museum is located within a complex of government office buildings, hence ask the gate person for directions.
