The Fontanna Czterech Kwartałów (Four Quarters Fountain) is a notable landmark in Gdańsk, Poland, situated at the intersection of Świętego Ducha and Grobla I streets, near the Royal Chapel. Unveiled in 2009, the fountain commemorates the historical division of Gdańsk's Main Town into four administrative quarters: Szeroki (Broad), Wysoki (High), Rybacki (Fish), and Kogi (Cog).

Design and Symbolism

Designed by sculptors Ewa Koprowska-Szulc and Lucyna Kujawa, the fountain features a square layout divided into four sections, each representing one of the historical quarters. At each corner lies a bronze lion, symbolizing the city's emblem and serving as guardians of the fountain. The lions are positioned in various poses, adding a dynamic element to the installation.

The fountain comprises 24 water jets, illuminated in four colors—white, blue, red, and orange—reflecting the traditional banners of the respective quarters. This colorful display is particularly striking at night, offering a visual spectacle for visitors.

Historical Context

The location of the fountain is historically significant, as it marks the convergence point of the four original quarters of Gdańsk's Main Town. This area was once home to the "Well of the Four Quarters," a communal well adorned with four metal lion figures, each facing a different quarter. The modern fountain pays homage to this historical feature, bridging the city's rich past with contemporary artistic...

Great for childrens to play, if it is hot. If not, bring some spare cloth ;-) There are 24 streams of water, each one individually controlled. There are various changing choreographies and the water can shoot up to about 1.8m high. In the evening there seems to be lower heights, making it more suitable for small children to play with. I love that fountain, great...

Beautiful water fountain with 4 lions statues and dancing water fountain. Good attraction for both adults and children. Centrally located just next to St Mary church. Benches are available so that people can just sit and relax enjoying the fountain. Free to see this place.
