The monument of Nicolaus Copernicus standing in the Old Town Square is one of the most important symbols of Toruń. The monument was placed in its current location in 1853, making it the second-oldest preserved statue of Nicolaus Copernicus in Poland. The figure of the eminent astronomer was cast in bronze and stands over 2.5 meters tall. The sculpture was created by Berlin artist Friedrich Abraham Tieck. The Latin inscription on the pedestal indicates that the commemorated person is Nicolaus Copernicus, a Toruń native, who set the Earth in motion while halting the Sun and the sky. A place you must see in the oldtown center of Torun, it’s a amazing city that I could say one of the most beautiful city in Poland, even better than krakow and Wroclaw in someways. Hardly destroyed in WW2, therefore a lot of historical buildings survived. Torun also happened to be the hometown of Nicolaus Copernicus.

Beautiful place for photos day or night. 😎 Nearby: for a few złotych, buy tickets and climb to the roof of the clock tower above Copernicus' statue. It's worth it! Such a view!You climb right past the bells that chime the hour. (Stairs aren't even, so be careful. It's an adventure!)

La statue de bronze (1853) est l’œuvre du sculpteur berlinois Friedrich Tieck. Sur le socle on peut lire en latin " Nicolas Copernic, de Toruń, arrêta le Soleil et le ciel et mit la Terre en mouvement". Elle est située sur la place en face de l’ancien hôtel de ville. Nicolas Copernic est représenté debout, une sphère armillaire dans la main gauche, et pointe le ciel de la main droite. La ville est enserrée dans ses remparts, elle a n'a pas été détruite par la dernière guerre et a gardé tout le parfum des villes médiévales. Une autre sculpture, amusante cette fois, celle d'un âne en bronze. Au moyen-age cet âne était en bois et était l'équivalent de notre pilori où les coupables étaient attachés. De nos jours, il sert surtout aux enfants qui ont envie de grimper dessus et pour ceux en fin de soirée qui auraient un peu trop bu
