The monument of Nicolaus Copernicus standing in the Old Town Square is one of the most important symbols of Toruń.

The monument was placed in its current location in 1853, making it the second-oldest preserved statue of Nicolaus Copernicus in Poland.

The figure of the eminent astronomer was cast in bronze and stands over 2.5 meters tall. The sculpture was created by Berlin artist Friedrich Abraham Tieck.

Nicolaus Copernicus (19 February 1473 – 24 May 1543) was a Renaissance polymath, active as a mathematician, astronomer, and Catholic canon, who formulated a model of the universe that placed the Sun rather than Earth at its center.
