This hotel has a one star rating. In context of that, I will say for one star hotels it gets five, The rooms are simple and quaint and give you just enough of what you need to feel comfortable to get a good night's rest (after all, you're not visiting Madeira to sit around in a hotel room all day). Unfortunately, we didn't have breakfast in our plan, so I can't say anything about that. The hotel itself has a rustic romantic charm about it with lots of wood and a beautiful stone paved entrance way which gives you a feeling of stepping back in time to simpler days. The location is what makes the Residence Gordon so perfect. It's located on a cul-de-sac so there's no through traffic to disturb needed rest. In the old part of Funchal it can get surprisingly noisy. In any case, you're 3 minutes walking distance from a shopping mall which has all your convenience needs (even open on Sundays til 22.00). 10-15 minutes walk is all that you'll need to get to the real scenic parts of Funchal like the old-city and the harbor and coast. The woman who runs the hotel is kind and friendly lady, who sprinkled our stay with a motherly charm. Would definitely...
Read moreMy boyfriend and I have just got back from a beautiful week in Maderia. This hotel is in a fantastic location, just 3 minutes walk and we were in the old city. It seems to be a family run hotel and all the staff went out of their way to help us and make sure we had a great stay. It is well worth doing the Ribero de Faro walk along the levada, the tourist information office gave us maps and told us which bus to get. The whole day cost us 14 euros. Ponto Montiz is a beautiful place to visit too. We regretted doing an organised trip and would have preferred just getting a public bus-cheaper and we would have had more time to do what we wanted there. We loved seeing the dolphins and whales on an organised trip from the marina. It is all done so respectfully to the marine life which we were so pleased to see. Great live music on a Tues and Friday night at Barreirinha Bar Cafe. Also live music at the Bananas pub every night. Fantastic vegetarian restaurants nearby called Fala Fala and Restaurant Olives. Other all this hotel is a brilliant place to stay to explore the tropical...
Read moreWhat's good: Very centrally located - minutes walk to the sea front and the La Vie shopping centre which houses a large supermarket and some good value eateries - great for water, breakfast items and fruit. ||The hotel itself is in good condition and very clean. It's in a cul-de-sac with no car or foot traffic really either. ||Good to know: The hotel is fairly basic in what it offers and the decor is quaint/outdated. ||There were only two plug points on my room - one was very inaccessible. Bring an multi adaptor!||My room did not have a fan or AC. ||The bathtoom situation was slightly depressing: no shampoo or hairdryer. The units were avocado. The shower situation was a small square pan with a shower curtain and a shower that was hard to calibrate for temperature or hold still in the bracket. ||The bed was very firm. Bounce a penny off it, firm. ||If I'd known this all in advance I probably still would have stayed for my 3 nights - but been better prepared. I wouldn't have chosen this hotel for a longer stay. ||The hosts were very nice but spoke...
