Wandered in here (two of us) on a Tuesday, late May 2022..about 6ish as a walk in (did not book). Situated on street with a good vibe not too far off the tourist trails. Had been up and down a few times as on route back to our hotel (Pestana Carlton..see my review on that) and also a nice no nonsense bar (Chico..see my review on that). Good reviews were a draw for this curry house...and in short, they were not wrong. This is a reasonably priced place with good service and a cracking curry. We were first in for the evening and chose to sit outside (the inside is small...nothing fancy..but would have gone in had the weather been inclement). It didn't take long for the tables to fill around us...assisted by the taste bud busting aromas emanating from within. We went for pompadoms with chutneys, onion bhagis, lenti dahl keema nan, rice, and chicken vindaloo with a lamb shashlik. Added a bottle of white wine (served in ice bucket) and a cold litre bottle of sparkling water. All came to a tad over 40 euros. Generous portions...so much so that the inevitable doggy bag was requested and duly delivered. What I liked about this was that they provided us with the foil trays and bag to decant ourselves rather than take our meals away and arbitrarily just 'slop' them into containers (resulting in a later still tasty..but visually unappetising 'gloop'). Spent around an hour and a half in the gaff. What was amusing was that they asked us to momentarily move as our table was directly beside the double doors to the gas bottles that fuelled the cookers. Not wanting to risk a riot by cutting off the curries..we duly obliged while they switched a bottle. All took under a minute...and we were reseated to continue feasting. In summary...easily as good if not better than some of our best curry houses in the UK with bonus of being somewhat cheaper. Cheers India Gate and well done. Will definitely be back when next in Funchal to see how you are faring and hopefully again get some...
Read moreJoke! Booked a table online and arrived a few minutes early, only to be told we have no booking. They said have you got the correct restaurant, so I showed them confirmation email to confirm. Advised then we would have to sit inside as no tables are available. Went inside and it was just a rundown old cafe inside. Asked to be seated outside, just one minute I will have to ask. Then after 15 minutes nobody had come back to us, not been asked if we would like a drink whilst we was waiting, the Mrs and I decided that enough was enough and left saying goodbye to a group of waiters just stood talking. Absolutely no customer service, can't comment on the food as did not have a chance to order anything! On response to the restaurant owner, having an email confirmation of a booking then being asked have you got the correct restaurant is just laughable! The staff just did not want to know, why when shown inside and sat down was there no an offer of a drink, or a chance to look at a menu. The cafe inside was full of staff just talking, no tables had been laid, and to reiterate absolutely no customer service! We do not take google bookings, then why are you on Google for bookings, absolutely ruined what we that was going to be a lovely indian curry night. But did not end up the worst, ended up eating at Mozart in the Old Town, great customer service, food, and a lovely ride home in a Convertible Bettle back...
Read moreOne Of the Best Indian Restaurant in Funchal. Located in Rua da Carrera which hosts a lot of Restaurant has this only Indian Restaurant which is Unique on its own. The atmosphere of Outdoor Dinning was superb and amazing Experience for me specially at Dinner time when the crowd is great and the Food is just Amazing.
Personally I loved the Garlic Nan and Butter chicken which really increases your appetite for more. The Soft and chewy texture of the nan with butter and Garlic is just something else. Not Just that the Rice is extremely fluffy and soft and the grains separated as a Basmati Rice Should be. The Indian taste Brought to Funchal has to be the best. The Staffs are so accommodating and supports with smile. I loved the interior as well with the gods and vibe of Himalayas as the owner mentioned he was from northern part of India. Overall, I loved the food, service and the location. Would love to...
