Museo Militar or Military Museum in Lisbon is one of the best military museums of the World. Of course it is smaller than the Imperial War Museum in London, UK, Central Armed Forces Museum in Moscow or Artillery Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia. But smaller doesn’t mean worse because majority of the artifacts in Museo Militar are really unique. The museum building consists of two floors and basement. The basement is the typical XV century structure build as the Arsenal and survived nowadays despite of the earthquake of 1755.

In the basement and yard you will see the Great collection of artillery pieces starting from XV century. Some of them are Portuguese and some produced in other countries including UK, France and even Malaysian Sultanates. Some of those foreign guns were received as the military assistance and some captured as the war trophies.

Exhibitions dedicated to Portuguese colonial campaigns in Africa, Portuguese Royal family, Vasco da Gama, Luis de Comoes, Albuquerque and other outstanding military leaders of Portugal are situated in the very beautiful halls deserving to be the Royal Palace interior. The museum armory is small but posses the absolutely unique and very rare examples of medieval arms and armor starting from XV century.

Special exhibition dedicated to the most famous Portuguese military Commanders the King Dom Joao I and Royal Constable Nun’ Alvaro Pereira and their incredible victory at the battle of Aljubarrota fought on August 14, 1385 is small but the brilliant. Excellent exhibition dedicated to the Peninsular War of 1807-1814 is in the museum and represents to your attention real uniforms and arms of those times. And of course nobody cannot remain indifferent to the exhibition dedicated to the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps and its efforts during WW I. This is the epic story of the over human heroism and self-sacrifice of small Portuguese Force during the Great War. You can see the huge wall paintings painted by Sousa Lopes and dedicated to the common Portuguese soldiers and officers. There are also weapons belonged to the enemies of Portuguese Army. The very important thing is that all exhibitions organized in such way which produces you some notion about the adversaries of Portugal but the same time show the respect to the enemy.

So, I can say that Museo Militar is the real “must see” place, because anybody whatever his interests are can get additional education and knowledge about Portugal and its glorious history. To my mind that museum taught me additional lesson that the Greatness of Country and Nation doesn’t depend on the size of its territory and number of subjects or citizens. I highly recommend to visit...

BEWARE TICKET SCAM INSIDE

Bought a ticket from the office they only take cash! €3 good value i thought.

Once inside past the cannon room i was then approached by an older man that came from the direction of the desk in the next room.

The desk is manned and he was speaking with the guy on the desk so all looked normal.

He took my ticket i presumed he worked there he only spoke Portuguese normal ticket checks I presumed.

He then reappeared later on in the museum with a guy now wearing an ID ‘probably fake or provided by a staff member’ i was then asked for my ticket!!

WOW!!!! SCAM!!!!

I said that the older man had taken it! The two both clearly knew each-other. Both had bad English.

This was the worst most obvious scam i have seen!!! The two were even together! I think one of the guys weighed me up and thought they had no chance of intimidating me.

I just told the guy with ID that his friend had taken it and they both spoke in Portuguese and i was told ok no problem!

The place only takes cash so wouldn’t of been a bank record to prove it!! I don’t know how deep this scam goes.

This made me uncomfortable and i left missing a large part of the museum out.

Avoid this place and if the museum is reading this you need to investigate your staff as they are conducting criminal activity targeting tourists that have come to see your country!

Especially investigate the guy sitting at the desk after the cannon room!! On 13/07/2023 This guy was speaking to the older man that took my ticket. The other two are maybe not employees of the museum.

The building is part of the military and there is a military police officer at the main gate opposite the train station, maybe do your job?

I am ex military myself and had been looking forward to this museum for along time.

The place was empty large and very old if you are not very confident or alone this scam could be very intimidating.

Shame on for your pathetic behaviour you...

Lisbon Military Museum – A Must-See Gem! Our visit to the Lisbon Military Museum was an unexpected highlight of our trip. This place is truly awesome not only for history buffs, but for anyone who appreciates beautiful architecture and incredible attention to detail. The museum is extremely good value for money, offering a rich and immersive experience that far exceeds the modest entry fee. What really surprised us was how spectacularly decorated the building itself is – the interiors are so ornate and impressive that they rival, and in some cases even surpass, many of the city’s palaces. Beyond the stunning surroundings, the collection of military memorabilia is extensive and clearly labeled in English, which made it easy to appreciate and understand. From ancient cannons to detailed dioramas and uniforms, there’s so much to take in, and it’s all beautifully presented. I would absolutely put this down as a must-see in Lisbon, even if you’re not particularly into military history. The sheer beauty of the museum’s interior makes it worth the visit on its own. Highly recommended!

ATENTION ALL THE MUSEUMS DEPENDING ON THE NATIONAL DEFENCE MINISTRY ARE CLOSED ON MONDAYS. BE AWARE OF THAT. The Military Museum of Lisbon is a century-old institution whose inauguration, in 1851, gives it 170 years of existence and positioning as one of the oldest Portuguese museums. It safeguards a rich cultural heritage and has one of the largest and best artillery collections in the world. The Museum was created by Royal Decree of Queen Maria II, of December 10, 1851, with the designation of Museum of Artillery of December, occupying an old Foundation of Baixo and the noble building that surmounted it and with the aim of restoring and store rare and curious objects in the Royal Army Armory. Its history is closely linked to its location and where it is located: from the antecedents of the Tercenas das Portas da Cruz and the Fundação de Baixo (16th century) to Tenência (17th century), and from the Josephan structuring of the Royal Arsenal of the Army ( 18th century) to the Artillery Museum (18th
