Castelo de São Jorge, perched high on a hilltop overlooking Lisbon, is an absolute must-visit for anyone exploring the city. The moment you step into this historic castle, you're immediately transported back in time, surrounded by ancient walls, cobblestone pathways, and the echoes of centuries past. However, what truly sets Castelo de São Jorge apart are its breathtaking views of Lisbon's old town and the shimmering Tagus River.

The panoramic vistas from the castle's ramparts are nothing short of spectacular. From this vantage point, you can see the terracotta rooftops of Alfama, the city’s oldest neighborhood, spread out below like a patchwork quilt, with the iconic 25 de Abril Bridge stretching across the river in the distance. The view alone is worth the visit, offering a unique perspective on Lisbon’s rich history and vibrant culture.

One of the highlights of visiting Castelo de São Jorge is witnessing the sunset. As the sun dips lower in the sky, the golden light bathes the entire city in a warm, ethereal glow. The way the light reflects off the river and the rooftops creates a magical atmosphere that is both peaceful and awe-inspiring. It’s the perfect spot to relax and soak in the beauty of Lisbon while watching the city transform as day turns into night. The ambiance is further enhanced by local musicians often playing traditional Fado music, adding to the charm of the experience.

The castle grounds are also beautifully maintained, with lovely gardens, peacocks roaming freely, and plenty of spots to sit and enjoy the surroundings. There are also several viewpoints throughout the castle, each offering a different angle of Lisbon’s stunning cityscape. Whether you’re a history buff, a photography enthusiast, or simply someone looking for a serene place to unwind, Castelo de São Jorge has something for everyone.

Overall, Castelo de São Jorge is a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. It’s a place where you can immerse yourself in the rich past of Lisbon while enjoying some of the most breathtaking views the city has to offer. Make sure to visit during sunset to fully appreciate its beauty – it’s an experience you...

A Crown Jewel of Lisbon - Absolutely Spectacular This medieval castle is hands down one of Lisbon's most magnificent attractions, and I can't recommend it highly enough. Perched majestically on a hilltop in the heart of the city, it offers absolutely breathtaking panoramic views of Lisbon and the Tagus River that will leave you speechless. What sets this place apart is the incredible value you get with your entry ticket. The English-language guided tours are included and simply outstanding - just register when you arrive. I highly recommend booking the last tour of the day like I did. Not only did I learn fascinating details about Portuguese history and culture from our knowledgeable guide, but I also had the perfect opportunity to stay for the sunset afterward. Watching the golden hour paint the city below while standing atop these ancient walls was truly magical. The tour includes exclusive access to the beautifully preserved Moorish house, which offers incredible insights into the castle's rich multicultural heritage. The guide brought centuries of history to life with engaging stories and historical context that really enhanced my appreciation for Portuguese culture. The castle grounds are wonderfully walkable, with well-maintained paths that circle the entire fort walls. I felt completely safe exploring every corner, and each vantage point offers a new perspective of the stunning cityscape and river below. The camera obscura room is a delightful bonus - it's fascinating to see Lisbon projected in real-time through this historical optical device. Practical details that matter: the facilities are excellent with several clean bathrooms throughout the grounds, and the site is genuinely accessible for visitors of all ages and abilities. Whether you're traveling with young children, elderly family members, or anyone with mobility considerations, this attraction welcomes everyone. The combination of spectacular views, rich history, excellent guided tours, and top-notch facilities makes this castle an absolute must-visit. Plan to spend at least half a day here, and definitely try to catch that sunset - you...

Rude and unprofessional behavior at the ticket office – unacceptable experience

I visited with my partner to purchase two tickets, and we had just finished drinking a can of cola and an iced tea while waiting in line. We were carrying the empty cans, simply looking for a place to throw them away. At the entrance, the security lady informed us that drinks were not allowed inside. I politely explained that we had already finished them and just needed a bin to dispose of the empty cans.

As I approached the first ticket booth, the man working there started yelling at me aggressively, saying I was not allowed with drinks. I calmly repeated that they were empty, and I just wanted to throw them away after purchasing the tickets. Instead of treating the situation professionally, he rolled his eyes, insulted me, and told me I was “rude” and should have left the line to throw them outside, then come back and start the queue all over again.

When I told him this was not appropriate and that he should not speak to customers this way, he rolled his eyes again and said, “Because you deserve it.” Another staff member standing nearby finally intervened and told me I could just place the cans in the corner and continue.

After leaving the ticket booth and heading towards the castle, I saw a trash bin right there, full of other empty bottles and cans, meaning he could have easily pointed me there in the first place instead of humiliating me.

I went back, picked up the cans, showed him the trash bin, and told him clearly: “You could have just said that, like everyone else does.”

When I asked to speak to someone in charge, a supervisor came out and apologized on behalf of the staff. The only compensation offered was free entry the next day to watch the sunset — but after such treatment, I will never set foot in this place or country again.

This is not how you treat paying visitors, and certainly not how you handle minor situations with basic human decency. If you cannot train your staff to speak respectfully, then you should not be in the...
