I love learning about history of medicine especially being an herbalist and nurse but I was appalled at the way this museum portrayed central and South American, Native American/indigenous and African medicine history. As someone who’s Afro Latino and learned about the different modalities of herbal medicine and healing there could have been sooo much more to these exhibits but instead they were limited to a few sculptures of medicine men and pots with art on them. There was a statue of a Mexican medicine man where they described his traditional scarrification as mutilation. The indigenous/Native American section only had tobacco, a few medicine pouches and bag with a scalp in it. What kind of message are they conveying by showing only this to represent all the different First Nations who had a history of complex herbal medicine making? The Africa section had artifacts from Indonesia and Papúa New Guinea which aren’t even in Africa. If you are going to include something from these parts of the world please at least do research and talk more about the types of plant medicine and herbs they use instead of just trying to portray us all as primitive and savage. It just came off racist and I was very...

A 5000 year journey through the history of pharma from the amulets of Egypt,to the Romans, middle Ages, famous expeditions to the North Pole and all the way to the modern age. On the ground floor you will see various pharmacies from the conventual to a Chinese one, labs and pill making machinery. Found very interesting the part on Odette Ferreira a famous scientist who worked on AIDS and on promoting single use syringes for drug users and how she fought against the societal norms. Greatly enjoyed the visit and the guide was great, she brought all of the items to life! And if you are tired after all the visiting you can go down to the restaurant/terrace for a drink and bite and a great view...

A great collection of pharmacy, health and medicine related items from all over the world and especially European countries. Enough to see to easily spend one or several hours. Several very nicely reconstructed whole pharmacy rooms from different eras. I can't remember the admission price unfortunately, but this museum is included in the Lisboa Card. One drawback is that only some of the text panels about the history of pharmaceutics and medicine are translated into English. Sometimes you can get the gist by pointing the camera at the text panels in the Google Translate app. Most of the displayed items' labels are in both Portuguese and English, thankfully.

I LOVED this place. For a pittance of an entrance fee, you can see incredible artifacts spanning centuries, dating back to ancient Egyptian times. Yes, some exhibits are not well-arranged: random sandwiching of South America and Tibetan cases between European exhibits as one example. Yes, some cases are not lit up; and the intro placards to each section aren’t translated (but are roughly done so in the online guide). There is a random model croc in the pharmacy exhibit with no explanation haha. But all artifacts and exhibits have English translations. My friend and I spent about 2 hours in here. Utterly fascinating. The ticket counter employee was unpleasant.
