World of Discoveries in Porto is a captivating interactive museum and theme park that transports visitors back to the Age of Exploration, a pivotal era in global history when Portuguese navigators charted unknown territories and expanded the world's horizons. Perfect for history buffs, families, and curious minds, this unique attraction offers an immersive experience that combines education with entertainment.

Located in a beautifully designed space near Porto’s historic Ribeira district, World of Discoveries stands out with its striking façade and inviting entrance. As you step inside, you’re immediately enveloped by the atmosphere of the 15th and 16th centuries, when Portugal was at the forefront of maritime exploration.

The journey begins with a series of well-curated exhibits that provide context and background on the Age of Discovery. Through a combination of detailed dioramas, informative panels, and multimedia presentations, visitors learn about the motivations, technologies, and significant figures behind Portugal's explorations. The displays are rich with artifacts, replicas, and interactive elements, making the history accessible and engaging for all ages.

One of the highlights of World of Discoveries is the boat ride, an immersive experience that takes you on a simulated voyage through the key moments of Portuguese exploration. As you glide through expertly recreated scenes, complete with lifelike figures, atmospheric lighting, and sound effects, you’ll feel as if you’re alongside famous explorers like Vasco da Gama and Ferdinand Magellan. This ride brings to life the challenges and triumphs of their journeys, offering a dynamic and visceral understanding of the era.

Thematic rooms dedicated to different regions and discoveries enhance the narrative. From the exotic markets of India to the lush landscapes of Brazil, each area is meticulously designed to reflect the unique cultures and environments encountered by Portuguese explorers. These exhibits are not only visually stunning but also educational, highlighting the impact of these discoveries on global trade, culture, and knowledge.

World of Discoveries also excels in its interactive components. Throughout the museum, visitors can engage with touchscreens, interactive maps, and hands-on activities that deepen the learning experience. Kids, in particular, will enjoy the chance to steer a ship, try on historical costumes, and participate in navigational challenges.

The museum’s commitment to providing a comprehensive and engaging experience extends to its educational programs. Regular workshops, guided tours, and special events offer additional opportunities to delve deeper into specific aspects of the Age of Exploration. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides bring history to life with fascinating stories and insights.

No visit to World of Discoveries would be complete without a stop at the on-site restaurant and gift shop. The restaurant offers a menu inspired by the flavors and cuisines encountered by Portuguese explorers, providing a culinary journey that complements the historical experience. The gift shop, meanwhile, is filled with unique souvenirs, books, and educational materials that allow visitors to take a piece of their adventure home.

In conclusion, World of Discoveries is more than just a museum; it’s a portal to the past that offers an engaging and educational experience for visitors of all ages. Through its innovative exhibits, interactive displays, and immersive attractions, it brings the Age of Exploration to life in a way that is both informative and entertaining. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a family looking for a fun day out, or simply curious about Portugal’s storied past, World of Discoveries is a must-visit...

When I went the price per adult was 17 euro... absolutely overpriced. There are a couple rooms with basic Portuguese history info before you get to the ride, the whole reason this costs so much - the ride is absolutely not worth the price, and I usually loved themed rides like this. I was shocked that for this price point there wasn't a single animatronic on the ride. Also the audio track was obviously old and in poor condition because it kept making awful screeching noises, at one point screaming for several minutes straight during the ride, which was unbearable. When it wasn't screeching and the narrator was talking, the audio quality was still really poor and not nice to listen to. And there were (clearly not intentional) cobwebs over parts of the ride exhibits. Obviously they are not maintaining this ride on multiple fronts.

Plus, I get it's a Portuguese history museum primarily aimed at kids, but it had one of the most out of touch nationalistic narrations I've ever heard. It was really jarring to hear them talk about some brutal colonizing periods of Portuguese history with the chipper tone of "these people are so lucky we visited them and took over!" and not even a passing mild comment on the negative side effects, or even just neutrality regarding the colonization. Just pure "wow they are so lucky the amazing Portuguese took over their culture. And now they all speak Portuguese, isn't that so cool?". Even when discussing countries they didn't colonize, it was still weird. At one point they mention the "delicate" Japanese "submitting" to the Portuguese visitors and I had to cringe.

The only reason this even gets two stars is just because I'm a huge fan of themed environments, and the (totally still) themed environments were fun (though they did have a tunnel that was entirely a screen with really bad CGI).

Last year I visited Efteling, a fairytale theme park in the Netherlands (not a country known for being cheap) and a ticket for that was 38 euro, and that's a park with tons of incredible rides and high-quality animatronics everywhere. And this was nearly half the price of that. Absurd. And even just within Portugal, for 10 euro in Sintra, you can spend hours in Pena Park (and walk along some of the terraces of Pena palace). And this is supposed to be worth more than that experience?

Maybe if the information in the museum was of better quality I would be a little less harsh, but this really felt like a poorly maintained...

We took our daughters here because of the reviews and it looked like fun. It felt a bit pricey when we bought our tickets and the place looks small from the outside. But we weren't disappointed. The first four rooms have information about Portugues naval exploration in the 15th and 16th century - the types of boats and their history, life on the ships, info on some of the key explorers and their routes, etc. Some of the touchscreens, as others have mentioned, were a bit unresponsive and required some patience but not that big a deal. More disruptive were our kids who wanted to play and wanted stimulation - they played for quite a while with the fake food and fake cooking fire in the section about life onboard a Portuguese exploration vessel. So, perhaps this aspect of the experience could have been developed further, though the exhibitions were high quality and quite beautiful. But once we got on the boat ride the girls were in heaven. I have to say I have no idea where they fit that entire boat course in that building - it was much longer than we would have expected. We appreciated that it didn't feel rushed and the boat made a languorous journey through the various exhibits, representing the expansion of Portuguese influence and commerce (and conquest) leading up to their arrival in India. The exhibits were very beautiful with some high production light show features that our kids loved. If we return to Porto we will definitely come back and tell other parents about this exhibit. The website doesn't make it clear but if you are going by transit, take the metro to Sao Bento station and from there take the 500 bus downhill towards the river - you will see it on the inland side of the road. I believe that the bus stop is Alfandega but you can ask the driver to...

Very interesting and creative exhibitions, covering a vast amount of history and geography. Very interactive, good for kids (and adults - I am 22 and had lots of fun). The highlight was the boat ride. 22 minutes through various scenes all over the world. Beautifully designed. Felt like I was on a Disney ride. It is very slow though, so not scary at all. My only criticism is that the history is a very pro-Portuguese perspective, and glosses over some of the more contentious aspects. The boat ride history ends with the Portuguese conquest of Brazil, and the establishment of mining industries and sugar plantations but makes no mention whatsoever of slavery or war - 2 central aspects of Portuguese imperial and mercantile power. I'm a History student so it stuck out to me that the rest of the place was really detailed and meticulous when it came to things like navigational instruments, life at sea, and trade, but something as big (and admittedly difficult to handle but necessary) as slavery wasn't mentioned. Otherwise great fun, definitely recommend!

We really enjoyed our visit here, but in terms of looking for a serious museum, if you're hoping for the Portuguese version of the Greenwich Maritime Museum or the Jorvik Viking Centre, you should exponentially lower your expectations. Many of the exhibits seem a bit threadbare and dated and much of the text and commentary provided seems verbose and pedantic, like it's been cut and pasted unedited from somewhere without enough thought to tailor things concisely for the visitor. Yet World of Discoveries works best when you think of it as akin to the sort of attraction you might find in a theme park. As long as its not too busy, families will really enjoy this - I like the way you can try items of armour on for size, how happy and friendly the staff seem and then, of course, you have the main draw of the boat ride touring around Portugal's colonial history. It is a little bit pricey if you're a big family, but we had a huge amount of fun and would still recommend it.

This was one of the most unusual thing I’ve ever did in a city. World of Discoveries is a museum like no other. The first part is a walkthrough to learn more about the past of Portugal and Porto. It is quite small but interesting! But the best part of this attraction is the boat ride. It was such a fun thing to do! The boat ride was slow and enjoyable. We were all alone in our boat so we were able to really enjoy it. During your journey, you wander around different ambiance through the history of Portugal and their links with other countries in the world. You have an audio commentary during the boat ride that is available in several languages. I just wished it was possible to do a second ride if the place isn’t busy. Many boats were empty but I was too shy to ask for more. It’s a fantastic place that reminded me a bit of Disney rides like Pirates of the Caribbean (without the fall).
