Read moreWhen I went the price per adult was 17 euro... absolutely overpriced. There are a couple rooms with basic Portuguese history info before you get to the ride, the whole reason this costs so much - the ride is absolutely not worth the price, and I usually loved themed rides like this. I was shocked that for this price point there wasn't a single animatronic on the ride. Also the audio track was obviously old and in poor condition because it kept making awful screeching noises, at one point screaming for several minutes straight during the ride, which was unbearable. When it wasn't screeching and the narrator was talking, the audio quality was still really poor and not nice to listen to. And there were (clearly not intentional) cobwebs over parts of the ride exhibits. Obviously they are not maintaining this ride on multiple fronts.
Plus, I get it's a Portuguese history museum primarily aimed at kids, but it had one of the most out of touch nationalistic narrations I've ever heard. It was really jarring to hear them talk about some brutal colonizing periods of Portuguese history with the chipper tone of "these people are so lucky we visited them and took over!" and not even a passing mild comment on the negative side effects, or even just neutrality regarding the colonization. Just pure "wow they are so lucky the amazing Portuguese took over their culture. And now they all speak Portuguese, isn't that so cool?". Even when discussing countries they didn't colonize, it was still weird. At one point they mention the "delicate" Japanese "submitting" to the Portuguese visitors and I had to cringe.
The only reason this even gets two stars is just because I'm a huge fan of themed environments, and the (totally still) themed environments were fun (though they did have a tunnel that was entirely a screen with really bad CGI).
Last year I visited Efteling, a fairytale theme park in the Netherlands (not a country known for being cheap) and a ticket for that was 38 euro, and that's a park with tons of incredible rides and high-quality animatronics everywhere. And this was nearly half the price of that. Absurd. And even just within Portugal, for 10 euro in Sintra, you can spend hours in Pena Park (and walk along some of the terraces of Pena palace). And this is supposed to be worth more than that experience?
Maybe if the information in the museum was of better quality I would be a little less harsh, but this really felt like a poorly maintained...
Read moreWe took our daughters here because of the reviews and it looked like fun. It felt a bit pricey when we bought our tickets and the place looks small from the outside. But we weren't disappointed. The first four rooms have information about Portugues naval exploration in the 15th and 16th century - the types of boats and their history, life on the ships, info on some of the key explorers and their routes, etc. Some of the touchscreens, as others have mentioned, were a bit unresponsive and required some patience but not that big a deal. More disruptive were our kids who wanted to play and wanted stimulation - they played for quite a while with the fake food and fake cooking fire in the section about life onboard a Portuguese exploration vessel. So, perhaps this aspect of the experience could have been developed further, though the exhibitions were high quality and quite beautiful. But once we got on the boat ride the girls were in heaven. I have to say I have no idea where they fit that entire boat course in that building - it was much longer than we would have expected. We appreciated that it didn't feel rushed and the boat made a languorous journey through the various exhibits, representing the expansion of Portuguese influence and commerce (and conquest) leading up to their arrival in India. The exhibits were very beautiful with some high production light show features that our kids loved. If we return to Porto we will definitely come back and tell other parents about this exhibit. The website doesn't make it clear but if you are going by transit, take the metro to Sao Bento station and from there take the 500 bus downhill towards the river - you will see it on the inland side of the road. I believe that the bus stop is Alfandega but you can ask the driver to...
