We recently had the pleasure of visiting Alfandega Douro Restaurant in Porto, recommended to us by our Bolt driver Delio. And let me tell you, we were not disappointed!
The star of the show was undoubtedly their famous Francesinha, a traditional Portuguese dish that is essentially a sandwich filled with various meats, covered in melted cheese, and topped with a spicy tomato-based sauce. The Francesinha at Alfandega Douro is cooked in a forno a lenha, which adds an extra layer of smoky flavor to the dish. The combination of the tender meats, melted cheese, and tangy sauce was simply mouth-watering, and I can understand why it's so famous!
Aside from the Francesinha, we also sampled a few other dishes on the menu, and each one was equally delicious. The restaurant itself is located inside the World of Discoveries museum, which adds a unique and interesting atmosphere to the dining experience.
Overall, I had a fantastic time at Alfandega Douro and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Porto. The food was amazing, the atmosphere was great, and the service was friendly and attentive. Don't miss out on the chance to try their famous...
Read moreThis is definitely one to avoid! It's a different enterprise from the World of Discoveries downstairs. The manager is probably one of the rudest people we've ever met. My husband asked if the restaurant was open as they were still laying the tables and the reply was, "You got in, didn't you?" We went in because it was pouring with rain and there was nowhere else to eat nearby. We asked the manager to explain the menu as it was in Portuguese and he spoke good English. He was completely monosyllabic and unhelpful, radiating hostility. Maybe he didn't like English people! I ordered a mixed salad. I got a plate of lettuce, grated carrot and sliced white onion with four slivers of anaemic tomato. No dressing. That was my lunch. My husband had a local dish which turned out to be a thick sandwich with melted cheese and a fried egg, floating in a sauce of indeterminate flavour. It was a very unpleasant interlude in an otherwise lovely...
Read moreWhen they bring my order, instead of “bom appetit” I received a rude remark from waiter that I should not share it or I will be extra charged for 3 euros. I wasn't going to and I did’t ask for a spare plate and 3 euro is not a big deal but it sounded very disgusting and what right do they have to decide what I can do with my food and what not. Maybe they tried to warn me (it was a surprise for many reviewers), but my appetite was spoiled. Better avoid. p.s. immediately refuse the welcome snack if you do not want it, it is a tourist trap used by some establishments. (by the law they can’t bill the food you do not order and touch, but does you want to verify?) The inside of the restaurant is very nice and the food seems delicious, I don't understand why...
