SNG Opera in Balet Ljubljana - The ensemble of the Slovenian National Opera and Ballet Theater of Ljubljana, performs an extensive repertoire of classical and modern operas, ballets and concert works. The theater building was constructed in 1892 to a neo-Renaissance design by the Czech architects Jan V. Hrasky and Anton Hruby. It has two niches adorned with Alojzij Gangl's allegorical statues of Tragedy and Comedy. The building's characteristic appearance is mainly due to the richly adorned front facade with Ionic columns supporting a majestic tympanum above the entrance. The allegorical sculptures in the tympanum represent Poetry and Glory. It is a very beautiful building and just in the middle in the center of Ljubljana. Right now they have a beautiful ballet Great Gatsby performance. The performances last on average for three hours, with one or two breaks. My mother always enjoys all the beautiful costumes, top singers and dancers. A...
Read moreThe architecture is absolutely breathtaking. The overall appearance of the opera house is one of the best I have ever seen. The opera and ballet ensemble are also well-versed at what they do. The downside of this opera house are the ushers and some Ljubljana visitors, who do not seem to understand what a proper opera dress is. They can be some deviations, like a navy or black lounge suit for men and something not so formal like an evening gown for women. Yet, I have seen men in sweaters and women wearing leather jackets with trousers. I mean, you could never see something like that in Vienna or New York. But overall, I give it four out five because of the quality of the performance and...
Read morewent to see the nutcracker and was there 45 minutes before and the main entrance wasn't open yet (it opened 40 minutes before the show, entrance to the venue opens 20 minutes before the show, so don't come too early). the lobby is quite small and the whole venue is divided into stalls, boxes/lodges and gallery. the enterior is in parts in a bad condition, so refurbishing is highly needed. the views are good wherever your seat is (I sat in the first row, where you can see the show and the orchestra playing). there are lots of toilets on each floor (most busy ones are in the basement) and croupiers will gladly help you with seating. I didn't like the fact that there is a net between the stage and the audience. the performance itself was nice and at...
