Amazing big market, must visit if you're staying nearby. A lot of hype in the market itself but not everything is nice. Personally tried the black pork kimchi roll (the veg inside didn't blend well with the rest of the dish) and king crab (I didn't taste any crab. More like coleslaw with a lot of corn nibs and a layer of melted cheese on a crab shell) and I didn't enjoy both. Also there is a store with breaded black pork rice roll (with different flavoured rice). I tried the black pork squid, and oooh, the breaded layer is so good! The squid rice is great too, but it was too much for 1 pax. Can expect a queue! There's a bread store next to it. The red lobster bread is so filled, and it is soft and yummy! But the black pork bun was only so so for me. Outside of the market, there are also stores, so do remember to take a walk around and find what you may like! I found a fruit store outside selling single persimmons for 2000won, but in the market selling 4 for 10,000won (they didn't sell single pieces) I tried the persimmon and it was oh so soft and juicy sweet, just the way I liked it! I went back the next night to buy 1 more for immediate consumption and asked the ahjumma to pick 2 more for me to bring back home for consumption next week. She very kindly gifted me a piece of kiwi too and told me to air the 2 pieces of persimmons. 😍

It sells similar market produce, general goods, souvenirs etc as Jeju City's Dongmun Traditional Market. However, the chocolates here cost KRW 2000 more compared to Dongmun Traditional Market. Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market is very much cleaner with dry tiled floors that are level. Dongmun Traditional Market has cement floors that are wet (probably because it rained continuously the day we were there) and worn out rough, slopes in various places and has multiple small pot holes. The most important feature in my opinion is while both markets have street food, Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market provides benches for people to sit & eat in a clean environment. With this clean environment, we decided to have street food lunch. We had grilled octopus, grilled lobster, water melon juice and octopus cheese taiyaki. Bought street food black pork bun, black pork octopus bun, teppanyaki black pork & braised black pork trotters for dinner. Noticed how every dinner dish has black pork in it 😂. All lunch and dinner street food are great 😋😋 except the teppanyaki black pork is meh. Had an iced tangerine latte before hitting the road. The latte is good 😋.

Second time back in Seogwipo Market after 5 years of visiting Jeju. Had a REALLY unpleasant experience this time round at this market whereby we almost got scammed by this Grandmother Mochi stall located right at the cross section of Seogwipo Olle Market. We bought two packets (one omegi ricecake and one tangerine mochi) and gave her 50,000 won. As you can see on the menu banner, it’s supposed to only cost 10,000 won for two packets (5,000 each as stated). The owner (grandmother mochi HERSELF in the magenta shirt and apron) took our 50,000 won and when we asked for our change she very rudely shouted for us to leave. We insisted we gave 50,000 won and wants our change back - what more there was a korean couple next to us who could vouch that we gave a big note. The owner’s daughter immediately came to the grandmother and reprimanded her, there after only she shyly (or slyly) apologised and gave us back our 40,000 won change. This attitude is totally UNACCEPTABLE. You as a market vendor should at least verify how much you have received before scolding your customers and shooing them away. As much as i don’t favour shaming businesses, this attitude is really unacceptable. I’m writing this so that other travellers will be aware when they come to this highly commercialised market, and to avoid any potential scams and unpleasant experience.

Had a horrible encounter at one orange stall in particular, advise to avoid this stall with yellow signage in the photo here. (Giving 2 stars because the rest of the market was okay, if there was a place to review the orange stall alone it would be 1 star.) After bringing my grandmother to try the sample the stall owners reached out to offer us, we didn’t end up buying anything and left. As I left, the lady on the right in the picture said something to me in Korean. I don’t speak Korean and was confused, and she began to chant the same line at me in a mocking and aggressive tone. Her counterpart laughed. While I walked several meters on, she kept yelling at me in a mocking and audacious way. Even when I waited for my grandmother outside the store next to their stall, she kept staring daggers at me and saying it. It felt really bad because she was clearly taking advantage of the fact that I didn’t understand her language to mock me and “get an upper hand”. Idk if it’s cos of the kdramas I’ve seen, but it was reminiscent of kdrama bully energy. Being taken advantage of like that was extremely unpleasant as a tourist. I would avoid this stall and its unkind stall vendors. There are many other stalls to choose from.

Seogwipo is basically a tourist trap where people pay more for something that would otherwise cost half. The two stalls we went to respectively sell Black Pork street food. Each serving is $4 (it's basically a fried Chinese pork bun except that the filling is not done the same) and there's this black on pork fried breaded gimbap. Both tastes....pretty average but definitely more unique than many of the street food we've tasted in Seoul or Busan. The fried breaded gimbap cost 11k won while the fried bun cost 4k won. There is long queue at the fried gimbap shop so you can imagine after ripping off 300+ people daily how much revenue they make. The gimpap is called black pork with bracken sausage but all you get is a tiny piece of pork inside with plenty of rice wrapped in seaweed, then coated with bread crumbs before they fried it. That's a very innovative way indeed but it's severely over priced. After trying one of it I feel it's worth perhaps 6k won.
