This bustling market in Seogwipo City is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the vibrant culture and delicious food of Jeju Island. We had an amazing time exploring the vibrant stalls and sampling all sorts of unique and delicious treats. Here's a closer look at some of our favorites:
Jesong Bakery:
This bakery was a real gem! We couldn't resist the allure of their freshly baked goods, especially the scallion and lemon garlic bread. It was soft, flavorful, and only 4,000 won! Kitty especially loved it.
Ddangkongmandu:
This stall specializes in peanut dumplings, which are a local specialty. We couldn't resist trying them! The peanut filling was creamy and flavorful. The real star was the wrapper itself, a unique blend of peanuts and black pork that added an extra layer of flavor and texture to the dumpling. We originally planned to order a set of four, but the owner was kind enough to sell us just two for 4,000 won (the set of four was 7,000 won). A great deal.
Red Lobster Cheese Grill:
This street food vendor offers a dramatic and fun dining experience. The vendor uses a blowtorch to cook the lobster, adding cheese on top. It's a fun presentation! Kitty loved the lobster cooked with a blowtorch and cheese, but I found the flavor a normal.
Chansil Cheju:
This fruit stall caught our eye because Kitty was craving Mandarin oranges. We bought a large one for 10,000 won, but sadly forgot it in our hotel fridge. We did get to try a sample, though, and Kitty loved it.
Joeksim:
This Japanese-style grill restaurant is a must-try for anyone looking for a delicious and authentic meal. They have a great selection of grilled dishes, including the Beef (Wagyu) Hamburg & Tcukune, the Tcukune (Beef Wagyu Hamburg), the Pickled Tomato Basil with Cream Cheese, the Shiitake Mushrooms, and the Green Onions. They also offer a great selection of drinks, including Kirin brand of beer that we enjoyed. The prices were also very reasonable for the quality of the food. The staff was friendly and helpful, even though the restaurant was packed.
Negeori Hotdog:
This stall was so popular, with a long queue. We decided to join the fun. The staff recommended the abalone hodoek, which was delicious. We were happy we decided to wait in line for it.
Overall, the Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the vibrant culture and delicious food of Jeju Island. It's a great place to wander, try new things, and find unique souvenirs. We highly recommend this market to anyone visiting...
Read moreSecond time back in Seogwipo Market after 5 years of visiting Jeju. Had a REALLY unpleasant experience this time round at this market whereby we almost got scammed by this Grandmother Mochi stall located right at the cross section of Seogwipo Olle Market.
We bought two packets (one omegi ricecake and one tangerine mochi) and gave her 50,000 won. As you can see on the menu banner, it’s supposed to only cost 10,000 won for two packets (5,000 each as stated). The owner (grandmother mochi HERSELF in the magenta shirt and apron) took our 50,000 won and when we asked for our change she very rudely shouted for us to leave. We insisted we gave 50,000 won and wants our change back - what more there was a korean couple next to us who could vouch that we gave a big note. The owner’s daughter immediately came to the grandmother and reprimanded her, there after only she shyly (or slyly) apologised and gave us back our 40,000 won change. This attitude is totally UNACCEPTABLE. You as a market vendor should at least verify how much you have received before scolding your customers and shooing them away.
As much as i don’t favour shaming businesses, this attitude is really unacceptable. I’m writing this so that other travellers will be aware when they come to this highly commercialised market, and to avoid any potential scams and...
Read moreAmazing big market, must visit if you're staying nearby. A lot of hype in the market itself but not everything is nice. Personally tried the black pork kimchi roll (the veg inside didn't blend well with the rest of the dish) and king crab (I didn't taste any crab. More like coleslaw with a lot of corn nibs and a layer of melted cheese on a crab shell) and I didn't enjoy both.
Also there is a store with breaded black pork rice roll (with different flavoured rice). I tried the black pork squid, and oooh, the breaded layer is so good! The squid rice is great too, but it was too much for 1 pax. Can expect a queue! There's a bread store next to it. The red lobster bread is so filled, and it is soft and yummy! But the black pork bun was only so so for me.
Outside of the market, there are also stores, so do remember to take a walk around and find what you may like! I found a fruit store outside selling single persimmons for 2000won, but in the market selling 4 for 10,000won (they didn't sell single pieces) I tried the persimmon and it was oh so soft and juicy sweet, just the way I liked it! I went back the next night to buy 1 more for immediate consumption and asked the ahjumma to pick 2 more for me to bring back home for consumption next week. She very kindly gifted me a piece of kiwi too and told me to air the 2 pieces of...
