The Seoul City Wall was originally built in 1396, surrounding Seoul (then known as Hanyang) during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897). The wall stretches for 18.6km along the ranges of Bugaksan Mountain, Naksan Mountain, Namsan Mountain, and Inwangsan Mountain. The wall stands at average heights of 7m to 8m high.
Along the Seoul City Wall, there once stood eight gates that were originally built between 1396-1398, but only six remain standing. The North, South, East, and West gates of the wall are known as the “Four Great Gates” (Sukjeongmun, Heunginjimun, Sungnyemun, Dongeuimun), while the Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, and Southwest gates are known as the “Four Minor Gates” (Changuimun, Hyehwamun, Gwanghuimun, Soeuimun).
As a tourist attraction open for tourists, it seems a bit inferior compared with the old imperial city of other countries. Its construction at least represents the spirit of an era, whether or not it imitates Chinese ancient buildings, but the South Korea was indeed deeply influenced by Chinese culture. The impact of this, this is a lingering fact!
Read moreLovely trail. From kdramas, it is not evident that the wall encircles a residential neighborhood. Watch out for cars if you do not stay on the trail.
A good place to start is from park across Dongdaemun. If you enjoy exploring and walk parallel to the wall, there are many access points to the wall. Just prepare to take narrow stairs between houses if you take this route.
There are lot of photo opportunities. There are also lots of persimmon trees along the trail. I would love to be here when the trees are lit up with that beautiful fruit.
There are plenty of places to rest along the path and even coffee shops and cafes with views.
Day or night, it’s a wonderful place to...
Read moreThis section of the Seoul city wall isn't one of the most scenic sections by any means, and if you're into hiking, this section is more like a glorified walk uphill than a hike. But if you're looking for a leisurely walk along the old city walls with some decent views, this is probably the spot. Its close proximity to Dongdaemun station as well as other attractions like the Ihwa Mural Village, Dongdaemun Market, and Heunginjimun make it a convenient place to visit. If you're looking for a conveniently located and easy to navigate section of the wall, this is...
