We visited the MACA museum in Alicante today and were genuinely blown away. We weren’t quite sure what to expect, but the ground floor exhibition was something special—it completely grabbed us from the moment we walked in.

The main display right now is by Kara Walker, and it’s unlike anything we’ve seen before. The room is filled with large black-and-white silhouette artworks that tell a story—some of it dark, some of it emotional, and all of it incredibly powerful. It’s based on themes around slavery and freedom, using the idea of the Emancipation Proclamation from American history, but presented in such a striking and creative way. You don't need to know anything beforehand to feel the impact.

Some of the images are intense, but that’s what makes them so thought-provoking. They really make you stop and think—not just about the past, but about how those stories still matter today.

The rest of the museum is also well worth exploring. There’s a great mix of modern Spanish art, including big names like Picasso and Miró, as well as local artists like Eusebio Sempere. The building itself is beautiful—modern inside but with an old historic shell, right in the heart of the old town.

Best of all, entry is free, and the staff are friendly and helpful. It’s a peaceful space, perfect for escaping the heat and spending an hour or two thinking and exploring something new.

If you’re in Alicante, definitely take the time to visit MACA. It’s not just a museum—it’s...

This is my favorite museum in Alicante. And to be honest, I was a bit surprised that I liked it so much. I've visited a few Contemporary Art Museums and I always left them with a feeling of disgust and misunderstanding. But MACA is so different. It's spacious, clean, tidy and the colors of the walls are a perfect background for the exhibits. My experience was beyond positive because the displayed pieces were very interesting, both the sculptures and the paintings. I found myself contemplating some of them, thinking about what was beyond and what motivated the artist to crest it. And I believe this is what contemporary art is supposed to do - to make you stop and wonder and think, without making you cringe and turn your head away. I felt so at peace there and liked the colors so much that I took two runs over my favorite pieces. This place is beautiful, please don't hesitate to visit, you'll not regret. And there are English...

Went in because of all the high ratings, a bit disappointed in the quality of the art, but I was very disappointed in the staff. There was an interactive exhibition where you answer a single question from a series of questions and post it on the wall on a sticky note. While I was sitting contemplating what to write with my child a staff came up and yelled not to do any drawings. Like wtf, no art in the art museum?? Did creativity end in 2000? Is there an age requirement to be creative? She then proceeded to remove the majority of answers, obviously this curator is the only arbiter of the creative. I will note anything not written in Spanish was removed. They should put a sign outside saying foreigners not welcome since that’s the vibe. Idk how that fits with this as a tourist destination since most visitors to Alicante are...

The MACA did a great job featuring both female and male artists and sculptures. The bottom floor featured the works of Esther Ferrer and the top floor of the Alicante Museum of Modern Art featured the “non sculptures” of Eusebio Sempere. Both artists donated their works and art collections. There are also other contemporary artists throughout the floors. I appreciated that Sempere believed in democratizing art and felt it was a social responsibility of an artist, after the Spanish Civil War, to create an outlet for a people who survived a dictator. The photos and art have a general theme of the repressed trying to find a voice and flight. They are hopeful and powerful pieces and at times leaving you to feel both sadness and buoyancy…. but ultimately grateful for their voices adding to the collective of universal experiences.
