A Memorable Family Outing at Santa Barbara Castle Our recent family trip to Alicante was enriched by a visit to the majestic Santa Barbara Castle. Perched dramatically atop Mount Benacantil, this historic fortress offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city, the coastline, and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. From the moment we arrived, my wife and our two daughters (aged 34 and 28) were captivated by the castle's imposing presence. The sheer scale and intricate architecture of the fortress were awe-inspiring, and we were eager to explore its hidden corners and ancient ramparts. We opted for the convenient elevator ride up to the castle, a fun experience in itself. As we ascended, we were treated to stunning views of Alicante, with its vibrant buildings and bustling harbor. Upon reaching the summit, we were immediately transported back in time. The castle is a fascinating labyrinth of interconnected rooms, courtyards, and towers, each with its own unique charm. We wandered through the various chambers, imagining the lives of those who had inhabited the castle throughout its long history. The views from the ramparts were simply incredible, providing ample photo opportunities and a chance to truly appreciate the strategic importance of this location. The castle also offers a fascinating glimpse into its past, with informative displays and exhibits detailing its origins, its role in various historical events, and its significance to the city of Alicante. We all enjoyed learning about the castle's rich heritage. While my daughters are adults, the sense of wonder and exploration that the castle evokes is ageless. We enjoyed discussing the history and imagining what life within the castle walls must have been like centuries ago. The expansive grounds also allowed for leisurely exploration at our own pace. After our exploration, we relaxed at the castle's café, enjoying some refreshing drinks and snacks while soaking in the stunning views. The café's outdoor terrace was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on our experience. Our visit to Santa Barbara Castle was a truly memorable family outing. The castle's rich history, impressive architecture, and breathtaking views made it a highlight of our trip to Alicante. It's a must-visit attraction for anyone traveling to the city, regardless of age, and a wonderful way to create lasting...
Read moreHorrible experience. It was a weekend in May, so not even high season, and there were only perhaps 20m of line to the elevator in the tunnel. Yet, due to a slow, tiny elevator (maybe 6 people + operator max) it took us almost 45min to get up. The walk alone to the end of the dark-ish tunnel (probably 300m or more) already made me wish I would've just walked up.
There's no kinds of regulations for entry and I saw some with huge luggages (taking the space of 1 person) or children's cart (2-3 persons). Couldn't these be left down for the time of the visit? This also a security issue.
Note that it's not free, but 2,7€. Card is accepted, not sure of cash. There are two machines to buy tickets with, but there's only one person who will "sell" you the ticket using it - so basically only one is in use at the time.
Overall, I recommend everyone physically capable to just walk up instead of wasting your time waiting for the elevator. Most of us could use the...
Read moreIf you have time to do the castle it's worth it for the views alone. From the town the castle looks huge and impressive but when you're up there it's so much bigger,it's amazing. The panoramic views overlooking the old town, marina and over towards Benidorm is breathtaking. We decided to take the lift which is on the seafront and you reach it through a (long) tunnel which is actually carved through the mountain underneath the hotels above.Under 3 euros each and free for OAPs it's so cheap but you probably will have to queue. The lift takes you into the centre of the castle not far from the cafe and it serves great coffee. The castle is on different levels with different rooms but with amazing views each time but there is a lot of walking involved. The lift takes 40 seconds to descend but it's easier than walking unless...
