La Gamba ("The Gambrinus" in English) is a large-scale sculpture designed by the Spaniard Javier Mariscal that represent a prawn. The work, inaugurated in 1989, began as an eye-catcher for one of the several restaurants on the Moll de la Fusta in Barcelona designed by the architect Alfred Arribas, a friend of Mariscal. The sculpture was constructed of polystyrene and fireproof polyester by the master fallero Manolo Martín. It measures about 10 meters long.

LA GAMBA DE MARISCAL La Gamba es una escultura de grandes proporciones diseñada por el español Javier Mariscal aunque curiosamente, representa una cigala. La obra, inaugurada en 1989, empezó siendo un elemento de reclamo para uno de las varios restaurantes del Moll de la Fusta de Barcelona diseñado por el arquitecto Alfred Arribas, amigo de Mariscal. Cuando terminaron los eventos de los Juegos, varios bares y restaurantes de la zona tuvieron que cerrar, incluyendo el restaurante que tenía la obra de Mariscal. Tras el cierre del local y varios litigios posteriores, la obra se quedó en el mismo lugar perteneciendo al Ayuntamiento de Barcelona, convirtiéndose en un símbolo popular de la remodelación que sufrió la zona costera barcelonesa poco antes de los Juegos Olímpicos del 92

Lovely lobster that overlooks the port of Barcelona. Was one of our last memories of the city and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Became a very positive meme throughout the rest of our trip (ie “Our Lord and Savior, Gambrinus”) and served to be one of the better memories of Barcelona. You won’t regret seeing his mighty smile.
