My husband and I stayed at Wittmore about a week ago and had a wonderful experience! There were a few things that I think could have been changed or improved, but overall a 5 star vacation.
Let's start with the Wittmore staff. They were incredible. Every single person we encountered: behind the desk, servicing the room, behind the bar, in the restaurant, were all so helpful, kind, attentive, responsive. They really made everything so easy, whether it was giving us directions, calling for a taxi, getting things we needed in the room; whatever we needed-- was done quickly and with a smile.
The location is perfect. Hidden in a small street in the Gothic Quarter, tucked so far into this alley that it made it very quiet. My only complaint would be that there is a bit of clutter on the street at times, but the staff at the hotel did clean up directly in front of the hotel. We walked everywhere, for the most part, although we had to take a taxi to certain destinations, but not many.
One of the nice amenities of the hotel is the mini bar and frequent snacks that are in your room. Gin, tonic, lemons, limes, beer, chips, candy are all there for your consumption and are replenished when needed. Also, throughout our week-long stay, we had additional surprise snacks like fruit and cake. That's a nice touch.
The hotel is small and adults only. The rooms are categorized by size and we chose small, knowing we wouldn't be in it too often. It did live up to that description (there is actually a smaller room called "tiny"), although it was very nicely appointed and there was a long entranceway that gave us a bit of additional space. I have two complaints, however. The first is, the rooms all face onto a center courtyard, which is lovely, with a vertical garden that is so special. That said, our room was on the first floor, therefore didn't get much light. The rooms are very dimly lit to begin with, so at times (most times) it was difficult to see. My suggestion would be to get better lighting in the bathroom at least, so there would be a place to put on makeup, get dressed, etc. Also in regard to the bathroom, there was enough unused space where there could have been additional hooks on the wall to hang things, a little table in the corner to put toiletries on, and even a built in bench in the very large shower, for things like shaving your legs. Some additional hooks in the entryway would also be helpful, especially since we had coats which took up a bit of the closet space.
Despite those few small inconveniences, all the positive experiences made our stay so lovely and we would definitely...
Read moreWe chose this hotel because of its tasteful design and the location. What we got out of it was so much more. If you've ever watched BBC's Poirot, we felt exactly like him on one of his many traveling adventures. This is easily one of the best hotels we've ever stayed in and definitely the best service we've had in a hotel.
Lots of attention to detail by the staff. The thoughtful note on our arrival with some Cava, the little guide pamphlet on how to best enjoy ourselves at the hotel, actually being able to leave your keys at the front desk so you don't have to worry about accidentally losing them (and so you too can feel like Pirot), the front desk mailing our postcards & calling a taxi for us, every night receiving a little slice of cake on our table, the server of the restaurant letting us have coffee+breakfast early before the restaurant opened (without us asking - she asked us if we'd like to!) on the morning we had to leave early for the flight, I could go on and on. All of these things were done "by default" - we didn't have to ask, we didn't expect special treatment and it wasn't some kind of upcharge to do so. This is the kind of customer service attention to detail you don't really get in hotel chains or US hotels, even nice ones. It never felt like we were being pampered, they just had high standards on service and executed on it well.
On top of all this - all the food & drink was very good and they use clearly high quality ingredients. It was mind blowing to me that the 3 course (!) breakfast was entirely free every day and the mini-bar was also included, refreshed every night and stuffed full of goodies (with Gin & Tonic fixings, catalan sweets, chips & more).
The rooftop pool was absolutely wonderful with a great view, though it was a bit cool mid may so we only splashed into the pool briefly. Still an enjoyable place to enjoy a room serviced drink (delivery of drink free of charge!) up to the pool.
I haven't even gotten into the perfect location. Tucked in a very small alley, this place bleeds charm. The neighborhood it sits in has easily some of the best bars & tapas we had in barcelona just right out the door. 10 minute walk to the nearest metro station. It was the perfect mix of interesting neighborhood, accessible to the city as a whole, yet entirely unique. I've never stayed in a location quite like it.
Oh and yes - the rooms & lounge seating area were also great. It's odd to consider that one our favorite things about visiting Barcelona was this hotel, that just how good...
Read moreWe stayed for 2 nights this last week and it was the best hotel experience we’ve ever had. The moment you walk up to the hotel (and you will indeed “walk” up, as there is no way for a car to get you all the way to the hotel) you can tell it’s something special. In the heart of (IMO) the best part of the city and tucked away like a well kept secret, it immediately feels exclusive without an ounce of pretension. The staff was warm, friendly and attentive. Julian, the concierge, took us to our room and gave us a tour. He was then seemingly ever present to answer any questions we had. Marena, made us laugh in the evenings at the bar. Each bar tender, room steward, front desk staff and waiter we had was flawlessly professional, warm and friendly. The rooftop was a delight and turns into a bit of a social hour later in the afternoons as people come to hang out and rest a bit before dinner (at least during warm season/good weather). The rooms feel bespoke and the courtyard was a great space to enjoy breakfast in the morning. The only drawback I had, which I suspect is a big plus for many, is that everything in the hotel shuts down pretty early. By 10:30 or 11:00, the bar was closed and everyone seemed to be tucked in. Understandable for a hotel with only 22 rooms and, really, not a big deal with so many great bars in the area. My personal favorites (both within a 2-minute walk) were Dr. Stravinsky (we discovered later, on the 50 best bars in the world list…makes sense) and Agüelo Taberna, a cool little spot with a great vibe and great bar tenders. This will be your best stay in Barcelona if you value warmth, style, and atmosphere. If you like pretension and fussiness (you know who you are), go elsewhere. You’ll...
