I'm not sure why I found this statue so fascinating, but I did even when garnered with a Spanish flag bandana and goggles that day. I had read a bit about El Cid before leaving North America and his unusual history.
The guy at the Cathedral book shop gave me great directions to this statue, so I found it easily. There is also a bridge right in the same area with lots of statues on it. En la Plaza de Mio Cid de Burgos se erige la estatua monumento a RODRIGO DIAZ DE VIVAR -El Cid Campeador-.
Ya en el año 1904 se constituye una comisión al efecto para su realización. Alfonso XIII coloca la primera piedra el año 29 de Agosto de 1905 con motivo de su presencia en la ciudad para observar el eclipse solar. Pese a todo ello la obra se demora hasta el año 1947 en que se vuelve a crear otra nueva comisión para, con motivo del milenario de Castilla, levantar por fin la deseada figura en bronce.
La estatua ecuestre en bronce del Cid fue esculpida por Juan Cristóbal González Quesada [nacido en 1897 en Ohanes (Almería), fallecido en 1961 en Madrid].
La obra se realiza en bronce con una altura aproximada de cuatro metros, izada sobre un pedestal de planta cuadrangular (5´2 x 4´7 x 6´3 m.) y conformado por distintos materiales: el zócalo de granito gris, el cuerpo central de granito rosáceo y la parte superior se remata con piedra caliza, todo ello impregna al conjunto un relevante cromatismo contrastando con el pardo metal de la escultura.
La obra fue inaugurada por el jefe del estado de la época; General Francisco Franco, un 23 de Julio de 1955 siendo por aquel entonces alcalde de la ciudad Florentino Díaz Reig.
