This monument stands in tribute to Pio Baroja, a Spanish (or Basque) writer having written notable novels such as The House of Aizgorri, The Basque Country and The Lord of Labraz etc. He is perhaps best known for The Struggle for Life which described life in the slums of Madrid.
The monument features a statue of Baroja atop a pedestal. The statue depicts Baroja in middle age with a beard. He is dressed for winter wearing an overcoat which is mostly buttoned up and a scarf is tied around his neck. On his head, he is also wearing a bonnet.
