Probably one of the most famous and visited landmarks in Seville, the ‘Catetdral de Sevilla’ is a phenomenal experience and an absolute must to see when in Seville.

This Cathedral is vast and has evolved over many centuries from its original mosque beginnings to the spectacle it is today.

Sitting proudly in the centre of the City, the Cathedral is easy to access on foot from all directions and once there, it’s very important to take your time to walk the streets that surround it as well as take time to sit in the Plaza soaking up the sun and in the shadow of the Cathedral and La Giralda, the amazing and well known bell tower.

Visiting this area during different times of the day enables you to experience the ever changing ambience as the sun moves around the Cathedral, casting shadows, lighting up and spotlighting amazing parts of the structure and then…. Evening falls and a whole new charm sets in.

Inside the Cathedral it is quite special. This vast building is adorned with the most amazing architecture and craftsmanship throughout. The level of skill and detail is next level. Take you time to walk, sit and read about the different areas within and you will easily take circa 2 hours from start to finish.

La Giralda, the bell tower was also great to experience. Round and round you go ascending the many levels by a ramp (not steps) until you reach the bell level. The views as you go up and at the top over the roof tops of the Cathedral and City are superb.

As you would expect, the tower is popular and very busy but the crowds move easily and respectfully giving everyone an opportunity to absorb the surrounding views from the window openings. If you time it right you may also catch the bells ringing whilst at the top.

This Cathedral is magnificent and there’s no way I could cover it all. Please use the official website for further information however, one thing that was quite prominent and stood out to me was the huge monument of 4 majestic figures carrying the tomb of Christopher Columbus.

Everywhere you walk in this building brings a ‘wow’ moment….. to visit the Cathedral and La Giralda, you need to move very quick and buy tickets from the website ideally, many days in advance otherwise you will genuinely miss out.

This place is very popular and tickets go fast. It would be disappointing to visit Seville and not have the opportunity to thoroughly enjoy...

La Giralda, the bell tower of the Seville Cathedral, is a historical masterpiece that tells a story of cultural fusion, architectural ingenuity, and the passage of empires. Originally constructed as a minaret during the Almohad period of the 12th century, it was repurposed into a bell tower with the Christian conquest, symbolizing the religious and cultural shifts over centuries. One of its more practical design features is a series of ramps, rather than stairs, allowing for a horseback ride to the top—a necessity for the muezzin who called the faithful to prayer and for those who later maintained the bells.

Embedded within its foundations, legends whisper of Roman and Visigothic relics, suggesting that the tower is built upon the bones of ancient civilizations . A curious fact about its crowning statue, the Giraldillo, is that it’s not merely decorative but also serves as a weathervane, hinting at the tower’s name, which is derived from ‘girar’ (to turn). In 2005, this statue was restored to its place after years of absence, marking the first time it had descended since 1568 .

Despite its age, La Giralda stands not only as a historic monument but also as a living part of Seville, its silhouette a constant in the city’s ever-changing skyline. Access to La Giralda is through the Seville Cathedral, and visitors can climb to the top to enjoy panoramic views...
