The Galle Face Hotel stands as a beacon of old-world luxury and history along the picturesque shoreline of Colombo, overlooking the Laccadive Sea. Established in 1864 in the colonial style, it was renowned as the grandest hotel east of the Suez Canal during Queen Victoria's reign. Throughout my three-day stay, I had the privilege of experiencing what this exquisite establishment offers.
From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the grandeur of the hotel's colonial architecture, which exudes a traditional charm. The reception staff greeted me warmly and efficiently, ensuring a seamless check-in process. I was promptly escorted to my room, a beautiful balcony suite with a spectacular view overlooking the Indian Ocean. The room was tastefully decorated, blending modern comforts and historic colonial elegance.
The balcony room offered the perfect blend of comfort and luxury. The plush and inviting bed, adorned with high-quality linens, made for a restful night's sleep. The balcony itself was a highlight, providing a tranquil space to relax and gaze out at the endless expanse of the sea. The room was equipped with a flat-screen TV (which went completely unused!) and a spacious renovated bathroom.
One of the most delightful aspects of my stay was the breakfast selection. Although I’m not usually a breakfast eater, I eagerly anticipated the morning meal. The buffet presented an impressive array of choices, from traditional Western fare to an extensive range of Asian specialities. I seized the opportunity to sample several new dishes, such as string hoppers, sambal, and various curries. Each dish was expertly prepared and bursting with flavour, transforming breakfast into a pleasurable experience. Who would have thought that a morning meal could be this exciting? I might even contemplate becoming a breakfast person!
My culinary experiences at the Galle Face Hotel were not confined to breakfast. I also enjoyed several lunches at the Veranda Bar, a delightful indoor/outdoor dining area with a relaxed ambience. The service at the Veranda Bar was impeccable, with the staff going above and beyond to ensure a memorable dining experience. Make sure to try to decadent tiramisu. I want to extend my personal thanks to Sumar, in particular, for his exceptional service. His attention to detail and friendly demeanour made each meal a pleasure. I was not surprised to learn that, prior to returning to Colombo six years ago—at his wife's insistence—Sumar served as a personal butler to a Sheikh in the Emirates. His professionalism and dedication are evident in every interaction, and he is a true asset to the hotel.
The Galle Face Hotel is beautifully located by the sea. Strolling through the grounds was a real Zen experience, with the sea breeze and waves providing a peaceful backdrop. The hotel also offers a variety of recreational activities, including a well-equipped fitness centre and a luxurious spa—neither of which I chose to visit as I was occupied with lunch. Additionally, the hotel features a small museum adorned with photographs of notable guests from over the years. These include Lord Mountbatten, Prince Philip, Princess Anne, Anton Chekhov, Empress Eugenie of France, and many others. The museum even showcases the first private car Prince Philip purchased when he was stationed here in 1940 for the very grand sum of £12.
To wrap up, my stay at the Galle Face Hotel was a delightful experience. The blend of luxurious accommodations, exceptional dining, and impeccable service created an unforgettable stay. The hotel's rich history and prime location further enhance its charm, making it a must-visit destination for travellers seeking both relaxation and adventure. Whether you're lounging by the pool, savouring a meal, or simply taking in the stunning views from your balcony, the Galle Face Hotel is sure to leave a lasting impression.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I must start packing for Istanbul. Cheers!
