Handily located next to some of the nicer shopping and leisure areas of Stockholm, and a charming park, the Hallwyl is a free entry museum- but, as I'll talk about later, does have one or two major flaws. The place is incredibly beautiful, and is faithfully preserved- if you want to see how the wealthy in late 19th Century Stockholm lived, this is a great see. The furniture is gorgeous, the collections are incredible, and there is something for just about anyone with even a passing interest in culture and history. There is a well-stocked gift shop, and the younger ladies who work here are very friendly and helpful. Now onto the bad bits. There is an older man who works here, who doesn't seem to realise photography is permitted. Despite apparently having been told by his peers that photography- including flash- is absolutely fine, he seems stuck in his ways, and rudely accosted myself and my girlfriend. He would not accept that he was mistaken, aggressively maintaining: "You heard my word. Good day!" This unpleasant individual then followed us for ten minutes around the place. I'm sorry to say that he needs to go- he's clearly stuck in his ways and rather soured the experience. This knocks off a star. There is a bar, but it's intimidating and expensive, and the loud pop and dance music doesn't exactly fit with the classic aesthetic. This ought to be changed, as we wanted a drink...

Sammanfattningsvis: Bra mat, goda drinkar, fantastisk miljö.

It's sick, and tells you what you could do when filthy rich at the end of the 19th century.

There is an interesting conflict in the house between the decoration style and the fact that it was a fully modern house, but the style was also one of several contemporary styles at the time.

It is totally overladen with objects and collections and a good example of how the upper crust lived. There are 16th century tapestries on the walls, armour, weapons, bronzes and ceramics, some of them pushing 3000 years.

The personnel is better than good, even though one didn't understand my GBG humour at first. I congratulated her on looking great, after 100 years + at work, since they all wear clothes from that time, so she said, skämtar du nu?

That sorted out it turned out to be a great conversation. They know a lot, and can give you comparisons with other houses, manors, and life for other classes.

This is a must see. Unfortunately Wooster was not there, and I don't think he would have been appreciated, since the owners seem to have been quite sensible...

even though...

Impressive mansion turned museum in the middle of the city. The entrance is very unassuming and I think this is one of a hidden gem even as a local as it is easy to think of this as some rich person’s house that can be shallow. In fact I think the Hallwyl family has to be recognized for their vision to curate their house as a museum and later on donating the property and everything in it to the country. During the visit, unfortunately the art gallery floor was not available (they said not all floors are available and they don’t have a schedule). I highly recommend to purchase the audio guide during your visit as it adds so much depth to the story. I am definitely coming back multiple times to see the areas not available including the art gallery and it looks like they also open the cellar for special events and the courtyard only opens seasonally in the summer.

Fabulous museum with so much to see and really well planned but then it was built with that in mind! A beautiful and well maintained authentic property from the late 19th C. A4 cards in each room in English and Swedish give a little of the character and usage of the room and detail about some of the design or contents. There was a stunning exhibition of Art Nouveau and the Swedish Jungen movement whilst I was there. A complete little printed guidebook in English was available to borrow with short descriptions of the influences and ideas of the works displayed in each room along with a complete catalogue! A guided tour gets you in to see further rings with a collection of works of art, but I was exhausted after spending nearly 2 hours here and went for lunch in the charming restaurant in the courtyard instead. 😋 And that was very good too.
