The Cathédrale de l'Exaltation de la Sainte Croix is a wonderful example of a working orthodox church, though much smaller than you can find in Russia. The church is open every day between 10am and 6pm in summer and 10am and 5pm in winter, though you would need to double check the timings on the site (in French and in Russian) of the church before making a visit there. The service is performed several times a day – the timetables can be found on the site of the church too. The interiors are of darker colours, maybe that is why the church looks smaller inside than from the outside. The piece of land it is built on was given as a gift by Geneva City in 1862 on a condition that as long as the church stands on the land it is free. Long before the Russian church was built on the plot (until about 15th century or so) it had been occupied by the Benedictine monastery of Saint Victor of which Francois de Bonivard, the inspirational character for the Byron’s poem ‘The Prisoner of Chillon’, was an abbot. The funds for the building of the current church was given by Grand Duchess Anna Fyodorovna. The inauguration took place on 26 September 1863. The church is open to everyone, though in summer women have to cover the head with a scarf and wear a skirt or a dress (no jeans or shorts allowed) if they want to enter the church.

The Russian Church, Geneva, the Cathédrale de l'Exaltation de la Sainte Croix, is a historic Russian orthodox church in Geneva, Switzerland. Grand Duchess Anna Fyodorovna, who resided in Bern and Geneva after she chose to separate from Grand Duke Constantine, gave funds to build the church in 1863; it was designed by David Grimm and completed in 1866 in the fashionable Les Tranchées neighborhood of Geneva. The Russian revival church with its Byzantine striped arches and gold onion domes underwent restoration in 1966. Must be visited even if you are not Orthodox.
