The beach itself is beautiful between the calm and high limestone cliffs, but unmaintained... dozens of boats with noisy and dirty engines are constantly coming and going from the bay! This makes it impossible to relax on the beach. The diesel boats at the main entrance to the beach are local folklore, they're super noisy and smoke a lot, but that's the way it is all over Thailand.
Well, let me say that I do not think it is the idyllic beach from the photos or videos. Not because it is crowded. We were there at the end of November, it was raining most of the time, I did not see a crowded beach then. But if you go to the beach through a long road full of loud diesel engines of various transport machines, motorcycles... just after the road towards the sea, there is the dirty part that does not seem to be cleaned... there are lots of debris brought by the waves, leaves from trees.... On the other side of the road it is very lively, with lots of shops, street vendors, bars and restaurants, massage centres, resorts.
Before we went I read a lot of reviews and saw a lot of photos. Beware many people post a lot of photos that are not even remotely from this beach, after visiting Ao Nang and doing this review I found in reviews photos from Maldives, Koh Samui.
There are no seats or beds with parasols anywhere. The beach is flat. The water is a bit murky from the boat engines, not very pleasant to swim in. Many tourists still swim in the sea.
There are many boats that will take you wherever you want to go if you agree with the captain or boats that will take you to various islands or a long tail boat to Railay Beach. You can also hire kayaks.
There is a part of the beach with stairs leading down. But the last step is too high above the sand... sometimes there is a sandbag to replace the missing step.
Along the beach there are many interesting statues and swings... at sunset you can take beautiful pictures.
Many resorts and hotels along the beach often organise their own private fireworks shows, creating a magical and unforgettable experience. Some people are really good at it... Sometimes it's probably done by beginners who can barely wave a stick. We have been lucky with both... It is necessary to arrive before it starts, because there are a lot of people... Someone collects a "voluntary entrance fee" from the chairmen, we watched from the road, we were late... so free.
The difference between low tide and high tide is considerable, so it's a good idea to check the times. At low tide, the beach is wide, but half of the sand exposed by the sea is muddy, and at high tide it practically disappears, the water is at the concrete wall. Sometimes you can find amazing shells there, but it's forbidden to take them home.
On one part of the beach, where the monkey trail starts, there are monkeys living there... they try to steal things from people, they open rucksacks, they go to prams and take a banana from a child... they opened a man's rucksack and took his MacDonald's bag and ate it all. It is funny to see them once, but it makes me sad later when I see them eating and drinking out of cups that people deliberately give/leave them... and rubbish is everywhere. This part of the beach is the dirtiest, the water looks like mud.
There is also some kind of river arm or stream that flows into the sea. It smells ... I better not imagine what is there, I certainly do not want to believe what I imagine, this is Thailand after all. But many reviews have mentioned it, I do not know how they know what is in the river.
To sum up, it exceeded my expectations given some of the negative reviews. Beautiful beach, warm sea, beautiful sunsets and lots to do. We did not swim in the sea, Ao Nang was our base for island hopping. The beach...
