USKUDAR MIHRIMAH SULTAN SOCIAL COMPLEX This complex finished at the same time with Sehzade Mosque * by Mimar Sinan was commissioned by Mihrimah Sultan, the daughter of Suleiman the Magnificent, according to Arabic in- scription on the main door of the mosque. The complex con- sisted of mosques, madrasas, mausoleums, primary school, inn, hospices and tabhane. But only some of them have survived until present day. Like all structures built by Sinan for the sultan and viziers, this mosque in Üsküdar pierhead is a new test in continuous space researches. Muezzin gallery is on the entrance door. This mosque is one of the most pure geometric established buildings of Sinan in terms of external configuration of prayer space. Marble altar with muqarnas and marble pulpit bear the classic period features. The most effective element of the mosque is the mansion with second row wide porches surrounding the place of classical narthex and the fountain towards the sea. The plan of this marble fountain under a pavilion extending into the sea is a twenty cornered polygon. There are geometric patterns and due to its location it is one of Is- tanbul's most beautiful places for ablution. Asymmetric entrance and stairs of outer courtyard are items that increase beauty of this structure today. To build 16 celled madrasa a bit more to the north-facing so that the entry would be outer portico of the mosque instead of being parallel with the mosque raises the suspi- cion that the settlement pattern on the site plan follows the coast line. Classrooms and the courtyard portico in front of the room either side of it turn in front of the wall of the yard on the mosque side. In many madrasas of Sinan, a side yard-free madrassa has been arranged. On qibla side of the mosque, leaving away from it by a little way the Elementary School consists of an open domed iwan and closed domed classroom. The graveyard of the complex is on the qibla side of the mosque. Here there are valuable tombstones and coffins remaining from the...

The Mihrimah Sultan Mosque was built in the 16th century by Mimar Sinan, one of the most important architects of the Ottoman Empire. This mosque was constructed for Mihrimah Sultan, the daughter of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.

The Mihrimah Sultan Mosque has an interesting story. According to legend, Mimar Sinan was in love with Mihrimah Sultan and designed two mosques in her name: one in Üsküdar and another in Edirnekapı.

The mosque in Üsküdar is located where the sun rises and has a more delicate and elegant architectural style. This mosque represents the sunrise and is connected to the Persian meaning of Mihrimah's name, which is "sun and moon."

Mimar Sinan designed the mosque with such mastery that on March 21 and September 23 (the equinoxes when day and night are equal), the sun sets behind the mosque in Edirnekapı while simultaneously the moon rises above the mosque in Üsküdar. This is interpreted as a reference to Mihrimah's name (sun and moon).

The Mihrimah Sultan Mosque has a single dome and two minarets. The tiles and calligraphy inside represent one of the most beautiful examples of Ottoman art. The mosque is located on the Asian side of Istanbul, commanding a magnificent view of the Bosphorus.

This mosque has been an important part of Istanbul's skyline for centuries and carries the elegance of Ottoman architecture to the present...

Sultan camilerine has çifte minaresi de görünümü bakımından ağırlığı arttıran unsurlar arasındadır. Minarelerden sağ taraftakinin daha ince ve yüksek olması devir farklılığını düşündürmektedir (Eyice, I, 50). Cami ile aynı bahçe içindeki on altı hücreli medresede hücreler revaklı avlunun iki geniş kenarında yedişer ve derslik kısmının iki yanında birer adet olmak üzere yerleştirilmiş, girişin bulunduğu duvarda ise sadece revak kubbelerine yer...
