I have not personally visited this site but I have been around to view it on Google maps and my interest is because my grandfather is mentioned on one of the columns as being in the Royal navy and losing his life in the battle of narvik on 13th April 1941 on HMS Eskimo as a 1st class stoker. I know he also received the Victoria Cross posthumously for his bravery and also for his country. Read moreWe visited the memorial to lay a poppy tribute to my Uncle, George Lewis Day, who died at the fall of Singapore February 1942 aged just 22 years, his name appears on Panel 83 he was a Stoker 1st Class. It is a very peaceful setting but certainly brought home to us the amount of names remembered on the Obelisk and the surrounding panels of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, as the well known poem says, they gave of their tomorrows that we might have our todays.
