Fantastic place for those who enjoy cold water swimming, on average one of the coolest coastlines in the country nestled in the shadow of the gulfstream. It is sheltered from most rough seas by the headland, it has a sandy gradually inclined beach so newcomers can be comfortable at their own depth. The scenery from the castle to the sweeping cliffs heading south to Filey Brigg is epic. It is however a scandal that the local authorities have not had the intellect or foresight to provide a shower or stand pipe for families to wash the sand off their feet when leaving the beach. They do not seem to understand that this is the nearest beach resort of many people inland and have neglected to give it the attention...

Thankfully well served by the adjacent RNLI station and in view of plenty of nearby shops, should you get into trouble there’ll be plenty of folks to alert the authorities and get you back to safety.
Public facilities are a little ways along the promenade and leave something to the imagination, but that’s up to the local council to get sorted.
