We found this place whilst checking out Tolcarne beach after visiting a few years back. The building is impressive with an authentic colonial feel. The inside was bright with colonial type furniture and Caribbean themed pictures. The Tiffany styled parrot lampshade is a show stopper and focal point. The outside decked area was impressive too with great views of Tolcarne beach. The staff were friendly and professional especially Millie who served us. There was an African female bust on the floor that could have been given prominence to add to the mood and style. The music was authentic Jamaican old school reggae to laid back tracks from a Twist of Marley which added to the ambience. We ordered starters of jerk calamari and Penko hake goujons. Jerk calamari was a bit greasy and not much jerk the dressing was fine. The Hake was very nice. For mains we had Jerk chicken and I had the Hake which was very nice good portion plus fries. The hake was covered in a light batter with a refreshing salad and sauce which set it off. My wife's experience with the jerk chicken was different. The chicken was bland with a covering of barbecue sauce, nothing like the authentic Jamaican jerk sauce. (Being of Jamaican background we know Jamaican food) The rice was wet and tasteless, almost risotto looking, but not a red pea in sight. The chicken should have been seasoned before cooking and marinated in authentic jerk sauce (a couple of clicks or a good Jamaican cookbook for info). Rice and peas typically is a mix of kidney beans or cow peas boiled then rice added later with thyme, onion, creamed coconut . This was disappointing as it was not what was advertised. For the price of the drinks i would have expected them to be much larger. The pina colada was.nice enough but very little rum, in fact I couldn't taste any. The rum punch was better, but again in a very small glass for the price in comparison to other Caribbean restaurants. We would visit this restaurant in the future and hopefully you take onboard some of...
Read moreWe are locals and have enjoyed bringing friends and business partners here for as long as this restaurant has been here. Staff are amazing and the main courses are exemplary however I would like to warn everyone to not order their oysters as only 4 nearly hospitalised me and my husband spent the whole night on the toilet. Had management apologised we would have accepted this instead we were told the Oysters had been delivered that morning and they would speak to their fish supplier. To then be advised to a Whitstable Oyster fan every year these were raw ??? Management is Poor and far too young and inexperienced sadly. We don’t mind spending 250 pounds for 4 but to not get a descent apology is unforgivable. We don’t want a free meal but as locals we most definitely will not be using you again as we have so many fine dining restaurants with the same views and we don’t mind spending that little bit extra for friends and businesses partners in my husband s case. Your loss and winter is looming. Good luck to the wonderful waitress we had and the chef that cooked our steaks to perfection. To the manager: learn the hospitality trade and learn how to apologise to people that got seriously ill from your Oysters! That’s it....
Read moreI already miss my break to Newquay and its definitely going to become our family traditions to visit once a year.
This hotel stay was absolutely amazing, great hosts and staff. The beach house cabins are cosy and on the smaller side but was sufficient for us and a baby. I would take this over a conventional hotel any day. We had the private beach at our door step and stepped straight onto the sand upon opening the door. It really was a beach getaway and provided the much needed mental break and to disconnect with technology.
We went on the boardmasters week so it was really busy but it still was calmer around the hotel.
Amenities/restaurants are close by. The hotels restaurant was lovely for breakfast with a view and had great vegetarian options
Loved this stay more than most holidays. Its on the pricey side but to have the beach at your doorstep its worth it. The calming ocean waves and breeze relaxing you throughout the day and night.
This is a secret I want to keep to myself but also so good you want to rave about it you...
