We planned our trip to Llandudno specifically to visit the Home Front museum, for our history obsessed 14yo son. We were very glad that we did!
Although it's located slightly outside the main part of town, it was very easy to find. Admission was very reasonably priced, and well worth it!
The museum itself is a bit of a tardis, and is much bigger inside than you might expect. Everything is very well organised and presented. The laminated fact sheets that accompany the exhibits were detailed and informative. Our children particularly appreciated the Anderson shelter and "back yard".
Historical facts about the war are included, but the exhibits predominantly focus on the social history and impact. The way in which the information/exhibits are presented really helps to give a more personal understanding of people's experiences.
We learned a lot during our visit, and definitely came across facts/exhibits that wouldn't be included elsewhere! We would definitely...
Read moreA very nicely laid out museum. We didn't quite allow enough time to read all we wanted to read. If you just like to look then you can go round in about 20min.
If you want to experience an air raid, then they have an Anderson shelter set up . Get in when the air raid warning goes off. Wait until the all clear (the long continuous pitch) is sounded before getting out and just imaging a cold damp feeling and the rumble from the bombs dropping. The V1 bomb makes a long continuous noise till its puffpuff engine cuts out, then a deadly silence as it drops to its final destination and explodes. It's not too loud at least now way near the horrendous volume people would have experienced during the war.
There's plenty of fascinating things to look at and read. It shuts at 4pm. Not 4:30pm as we...
Read moreI cannot express how much I LOVED this museum! We came on a day out to Llandudno and it ended up being the highlight of my whole holiday. So thoughtfully put together, immersive and interesting. I honestly could’ve spent hours in there happily but I don’t think my partner would’ve appreciated it. For such a reasonable price I cannot recommend anywhere more for anyone interested in either WW2 history or simply just wanting a better understating of our collective past. Although not a local I also found the connections made to Llandudno and villages people so interesting and useful to contextualise the information. Have already recommended it to so many people and would do the same to anyone else who happens to be...
