Mama Shelter London Shoreditch — Attraction in London

During my recent stay at the mama shelter hotel (Shoreditch) , I had the pleasure of encountering an exceptional reception staff that provided top-notch service. However, I must express my disappointment with the food and beverage team, who displayed a lack of interest in customer satisfaction and seemed more focused on themselves. It was evident that there had been changes in the bar staff since my last visit, as the attitudes and faces of the team were shocking, particularly when a family of five arrived at 9pm. The bar and restaurant closing at 11pm, hearing an Italian staff member rudely shout, "We close everything at 11pm," to his colleagues was unprofessional and unfriendly. On a positive note, the rooms were clean and tidy, and the hotel's location was pleasant.

Let me begin by praising the exceptional reception staff, who truly went above and beyond to ensure a delightful stay. From the moment I arrived, they greeted me with genuine warmth and professionalism. Their efficiency in handling check-in procedures and their willingness to provide valuable information about the hotel's amenities and nearby attractions were commendable. They were always available to address any inquiries or concerns, making me feel valued as a guest.

Unfortunately, the same level of dedication and customer focus was not reflected in the food and beverage team. It was evident that they had little interest in serving guests and were more concerned with their own comfort. This became particularly evident when a family of five arrived at 9pm. The faces and attitudes of the team were shocking, as they clearly did not want to serve anyone else. The unprofessional behavior reached its peak when I overheard an Italian staff member loudly exclaim to his colleagues, "We close everything at 11pm." Such rudeness and unfriendliness were highly unprofessional and unacceptable.

On a positive note, the rooms at the hotel were clean and tidy, showcasing the hotel's commitment to maintaining a pleasant environment for guests. The housekeeping staff should be commended for their attention to detail and their efforts in ensuring a comfortable stay.

Moreover, the hotel's location added to its appeal. Situated in a good area, it offered convenient access to various attractions and amenities. Whether I wanted to explore the city or simply relax, the hotel's favorable location made it an ideal choice.

In conclusion, while the reception staff at this hotel were exceptional, it was disappointing to witness the lack of interest and unprofessional behavior displayed by the food and beverage team. The cleanliness and tidiness of the rooms, as well as the hotel's pleasant location, were positive aspects of the stay. However, I strongly urge the management to address the concerns raised regarding the food and beverage team's unprofessional conduct and ensure that changes in the bar staff are handled effectively. UPDATED REVIEW!

This was my second time staying at Mama Shelter in Shoreditch and I loved it more than the first time! First of all I’d like to point out that for me this stay was expensive…a hotel room around the 200 gbp mark seems like a lot (and it is for many, including me) but I did a lot of researching trying to find somewhere better and just can’t in London nowadays. I was looking at places with interior rooms with no windows and a mattress on the floor for 150 gbp a night! And for a bit more you can stay at Mama Shelter and enjoy the vibrant decor, excellent front desk service (shoutout to Bianca who was so lovely and helpful!), yummy food for breakfast lunch or dinner and really nice rooms with everything you could need for a relaxing stay. The only problem I had was trying to decide if I wanted to make the most of the room in the evening, or make the most of being in London and staying out watching shows and soaking up the city!! One thing I will note (and mentioned in my previous review) is that they have a restaurant/bar with a live DJ at weekends, I knew this from my last stay and so requested a quieter room. I did have to upgrade to assure this but in the end I’m so glad I did because I slept better than I have in years. The curtains in the room block out almost all the outside light and there are special windows to keep out the exterior noise. I did notice that in my large double room the bed felt like 2 mattresses pressed together…so even though I was on my own I had to sleep on just one side of the bed to avoid feeling the crease in the middle! But that’s just me nit picking. I am usually someone who likes to explore different accommodations when I travel but I don’t think I’ll go anywhere but mama shelter in future when I’m in London. The location is also great, 10 minute walk to Bethnal Green tube which gets you into central in 10 minutes. Thank you Mama Shelter for another great stay! See you again!

ORIGINAL REVIEW I only stayed for one night and wish I could have stayed longer! Staff were friendly and really helpful, it's a funky place with cool decor that felt modern and interesting. There were a couple things that weren't perfect like the wifi only work in my room in the hallway or right up against the hotel room door, and my room was above the restaurant and despite there (very thoughtfully) being a kind of sound proofing extra window added to dull the sound, I was still aware of the noise from the guests and DJ even with the extra window and ear plugs in. But it didn't leave a sour taste in my mouth..I would definitely like to return...

The venue itself was very nice. Great atmosphere, decor was lovely and the rooms were smartly furnished with modern utilities which were placed creatively. Location is great also, but not central Shoreditch like the name suggests. The room was clean, large, and check-in process was seamless.

Moving onto the negative parts starting with the minor issues; only one lift was working which meant long waits at busy times in the hotel. It was London Marathon day and in my running kit at 7am I just wanted a cup of tea (which I can make in my room complimentary) and one slice of toast (I’m not expecting miracles but charging £19 for buffet breakfast when it was only me in there and all I wanted was one slice of toast is crazy (£500 for 2 nights))

Sadly what ruined our stay was the restaurant. The staff in general seemed moody, disinterested and gave the feeling that they didn’t want to be there. The bar staff were friendly enough but drinks service seemed to be very slow waiting 40mins for two cocktails on friday night (but given a complimentary shot to say sorry) - Even the Bouncer checked we had been served as we sat there waiting for ages for 2 drinks (I think he thought we were up to something).

We booked the quirky restaurant on Saturday as an early night was on the cards before the London Marathon, heading down at 7pm. Our waiter was new (hesitation and misinformation) but drinks were quicker than Friday night. He sadly informed us no cider for sale and took our food order (as we needed a GF option he had to double check with the kitchen twice what we wanted to order) and sadly when the food came the beef burger was rare (we weren’t informed how it would be cooked or how we wanted it cooking) and my starter arrived after my main. The chicken burger was nice but my french fries were overcooked and had zero potato inside them. No checkback was made at all and a different waiter asked if we had finished, the restaurant manager was walking around so I politely informed her of our issues she refunded the beef burger as it wasn’t eaten at all and gave us two complimentary drinks (sadly they do have cider and I drink it very slowly knowing it was free) she was very helpful after raising our concerns and apologetic on behalf of the waiter but no final apology or checkback was given as we paid the bill or left for our room (another waiter), and at check-out I’m sure our issue must of been mentioned on the account but no follow up was made. We expected seamless service due to this being a 4* hotel and £250/night price tag but...
