One of my Fave London Theatres Groundbreaking 5 Star Experience.
Over the years lost count of how many terrific productions seen here.
1999 the pure joy of Peter O’Toole in Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell, his final theatre production before departing this life – this was one of my earliest Old Vic experiences and to this day one of the most treasured memories. Will never forget the 100% standing ovation.
2000 was my first Matthew Bourne experience ( not the last! ) for the London premiere of Adventures in Motion Pictures’ The Car Man.
Kevin Spacey – Old Vic Hero – so many productions I enjoyed top of my list of course Richard 111
I loved how Kevin invested and sacrificed so much ( lucrative film offers ) to leap frog The Old Vic to superstardom – some of the staging changes with the entire audience circling the stage was breathtaking and will never forget Kevin going right into the audience ( Clarence Darrow ).
Quite recently: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead 'Daniel Radcliffe and Joshua McGuire star in this revival of Tom Stoppard’s play' BRILLIANT, a wow for King Lear Glenda Jackson.
Love this venue on EVERY level and it has pun intended Many Levels. Well I have saved the best encounter for the finale!
Right Place Right Time: John Boyega Woyzeck FIRST NIGHT – brilliant production, at the curtain call John looked mentally exploded you gave beyond 100%.
No big deal so far? I rarely these days do the stage door thing so resigned myself to the inevitability that John Boyzeck would not be popping down to the basement bar. I repeated my usual routine and bought my usual large glass of white wine hoping that maybe some of the cast would descend, just one cast member briefly popped in, the bar was unusually empty. Then I soon became aware of lots of voices and soon realized it was all happening in the Grand Circle Bar, briefly I thought well even if this is a special party the chances of John Boyega being there would be remote.
OK The Old Vic will now seriously tell me off – I thought go for it! Went up the stairs and there was the inevitable security blocking my way, greeted by sorry this is a party for cast members and friends only.
Crestfallen I returned to the empty bar, but hey no big deal. A few minutes later the same security guy passed through the basement bar and went up to the street door. I then realized in a moment that the stairs would now be ‘unprotected’ with low expectations I walked right into the party and the first person I noticed was OMG John Boyega, Within minutes I had my first encounter as I caught Johns attention his face suddenly beamed ‘Wow look at the man’ this was a reference to my attire, the usual quite low key affair. I complimented John and confirmed on his Old Vic First night debut and then we shared a hug.
I stood back with my trusty Panasonic DMX and soon realized that John was getting ready to leave, I then thought it was now or never, at the stairs I managed to again catch his attention and asked politely if I could have a photo. YES! I later discovered that the lovely lady that took two photos ‘now John we need one more with you on the other side’ was no less than Lupita Nyong’o 12 Years a Slave – one of my top five fims.
I could not stop smiling, just minutes later security asked me to leave, that was inevitable – but hey Right Place Right Time and having BALLS got me this now or never moment which I will treasure as just one of so many of this...
Read moreThe Old Vic, located near Waterloo Station, is one of London’s most iconic and historic theatres, renowned for its rich history, exceptional productions, and vibrant cultural presence. As a cornerstone of London’s theatre scene, The Old Vic offers an experience that blends the charm of its storied past with the dynamism of contemporary theatre. The Old Vic’s history is palpable as soon as you step inside. Established in 1818, the theatre has played a crucial role in the development of British theatre, with its ornate, traditional interior adding to the sense of occasion. The auditorium's intimate atmosphere allows audiences to feel closely connected to the performances, making every visit a memorable experience. The Old Vic is celebrated for its top-tier productions, ranging from classic plays by Shakespeare and Arthur Miller to modern works and innovative reinterpretations. The theatre regularly attracts some of the finest talent in acting, directing, and design, ensuring that each show is of the highest quality. Whether it's a classic drama or a cutting-edge new play, the productions are consistently compelling and well-executed. The Old Vic is not just a theatre but a community hub. It offers various outreach programs, workshops, and educational initiatives, making theatre accessible to a broader audience. This commitment to inclusivity and education enhances its reputation as a cultural institution that values and invests in its community. Situated just a short walk from Waterloo Station, The Old Vic is easily accessible from anywhere in London. Its proximity to public transport and the vibrant South Bank area makes it an ideal destination for a cultural outing, with plenty of nearby dining and entertainment options. While The Old Vic’s productions are generally worth the price, tickets can be expensive, particularly for popular shows. This might make it less accessible for some audiences, especially those looking for more affordable entertainment options. Although the theatre’s historic design adds to its charm, it also means that some of the seating can be less comfortable by modern standards. Certain areas of the auditorium, especially in the upper levels, have restricted views, and the legroom can be tight, which might affect the overall experience for some patrons. The Old Vic’s age means that its facilities, while adequate, aren’t as modern as those found in newer theatres. The restrooms, in particular, can be crowded during intervals, and there’s limited space in the foyer area, which can make it feel congested during peak times. Overall Its a treasure of London’s theatre landscape, offering high-quality productions in a historic and charming setting. While it comes with some minor drawbacks, such as the cost and seating comfort, the overall experience is one of cultural enrichment and artistic excellence. For theatre lovers and visitors to London, The Old Vic remains a must-visit destination that captures the essence of British...
Read moreI went here yesterday to see Rami in Oedipus. It was an amazing experience, and I've already booked to go again!
The dancers were amazing. The music had me bobbing my head in my seat, I was completely immersed in the experience, and I totally need the playlist of songs that the dancers used. They were so good!
I was in the stalls in row H and had an incredible view. It was my first time seeing a theatre piece, and now I may have caught the theatre and London bug!
It was a little confusing when trying to find a good seat because the seating started from F I think, so I thought I'd be really far back, but was pleasantly surprised when I was literally 2 rows away from the front!
The theater is located in a beautiful part of London, if you're not from there it's really simple to get there and locate!
I came on the train to euston, I then used the tube, and the people were lovely at helping me get the right tube to waterloo. As soon as you exit the waterloo station, the old vic is literally a 2 minute walk, and it's impossible to miss!
I do wish recording was allowed during the performance, but I do understand why it isn't permitted. You really need to go for yourself. The atmosphere it puts you in is absolutely incredible, and im so happy that it was my first ever piece of theatre I got to experience! It's inspired me to start dancing and acting again!
The staff and security were really nice and kind, making my experience fun and unforgettable.
Thank you for an...
