Cracking Pup! Recommended by a friend of ours. We booked a table as were told it gets busy and as we were going the Old Vic after our meal to see a musical we needed to be out on time etc. This Pup is literally opposite the Theatre so I would say booking a table is essential. We were placed in the 'resturant' side of the pup but we asked to move because I wear hearing aids and the 'white noise' from the air extractor in the kitchen was a bit too much for me. The waitress who was dealing with us was extremely accommodating and offered us several tables choices until we eventually chose to be in the 'pup' side. We ordered our food and drinks . My daughter and I chose the burger and my wife chose the fish and chips with minted peas. The food was delicious and hot. Our burgers were great, cooked to perfection! The portions are quite large so beware. My wife said the fish and chips were tasty but the mushy peas were too 'minted' and ended up tasting like mushy polo mints. So a slight miss there. For deserts, I was the only one ordering, I chose the brownie with ice cream. The brownie was good, extremely rich with a raspberry coulis(?) on top. The vanilla ice was creamy. The thing that spoilt the desert was the heavy circular dusting of what looked like Coco powder. It was piled all around the vanilla ice cream like a raised moat around a castle. It tasted like burnt dark chocolate and was extremely gritty. I didn't like that at all and to be honest it spoilt the desert. The service was quick when we could get the waitress's attention. To be clear, that wasn't the waitress's fault, it was very busy and noisy in the 'pup' section. The waitress was extremely polite and courteous and even put up with my 'Dad' joke! The meal wasn't that expensive especially when you take into account of the location etc. 100% will return again, but this time I will take my hearing aids out and then we can sit in the restaurant...
Read moreThe Duke of Sussex is an exceptional gastropub, one of my favourites in London and I go there regularly. It's helped by the fact it's so near Waterloo and near my work.
The staff are super friendly, helpful and attentive. The food is excellent... they have all the pub classics but also some interesting additions and specials.
They have a charcoal grill and their chicken is a speciality, well worth trying, as are their weekend brunches and Sunday roasts.
The chips are particularly good although I usually ask them to hold back on the salt as they can be a bit liberal with it.
A strong drinks selection with wide range of wines and ales. I often go there for lunch during the week and they could have a better selection of soft drinks. However, it seems their bar staff are all trained baristas too, so they do the best coffees I've ever had in any pub.
It's popularity and it's location just five minutes from Waterloo mean it can get quite busy on certain evenings, but always a great atmosphere. Worth booking ahead.
They have loads of covered outdoor space next to the green, which is especially nice when the weather is good.
The decor is one of the nicest things. The Duke is part of hippo inns, who have real attention to detail on the designs and decor.
After Harry wed Megan in 2018, they made the pub sign hanging outside into a very tasteful portrait of the newly named Duke and Duchess of Sussex. This somehow manages to be both extremely classy and extremely naff all at the same time, so I like to think they did it with a certain level of irony!
I use the WiFi a lot and it's fast and reliable.
All in all, a pretty great pub well...
