There is a market here on a Wednesday and Thursday. The number of food stall has exploded recently, especially on a Thursday. Unfortunately this has meant that some of the old food stands have gone, presumably because they cant compete (there was a guy we used to call "the pig man" who did a hog roast twice a month for years, he has long gone and none of the other stalls are as good as he was. The sheer number of food stands makes this place worth a visit, but having tried many, none really stand out as being particularity impressive. I work in the city centre and tend to still buy lunch from a shop rather than one of these stalls. I have witnessed some very dubious food hygiene practices (e.g. mixing raw and cooked chicken) and would seriously think twice before buying food from certain stalls (if you watch them prepare food then you will be able to work out which ones are the risky stalls and...
Read moreFROM A TRADER: A good, varied market that realy captures the rich diversity of Oxford. There's Chinese food, Persian food, Greek food, and even Hungarian, Goan (Indian), and Momo's.
On the non-food side, there are book and antique dealers, and sellers of all manner of widgets.
The market is run by LSD Promotions, who broadly allot stalls on the basis of seniority, so do check out the far end (i.e. further from the Odeon / George street and nearer Thirsty Meeples / Beaumont road to support new traders. 😊
Of course, I would give the market 5 stars: I'm a trader there! But I can honestly say it's a great place for food, and that the other traders are as charming and warm to each other as they are to customers.
The days are long - 12-13 hours, but rewarding, and it's inspiring to see people from all walks of life creating something so magical - like diagon alley, but with...
Read moreWe were backed into the main road which was noisy. There were quieter areas but the man who designated spaces decided we were only fit for where he put us. At first that's how I felt, but last night down the better end the campers were very noisy so it was a blessing in disguise. Toilets were inadequate, two toilets and two showers with pound slot for hot water, I'm back in England, I'd forgotten how it works here. We were hoping for peaceful cycling but there was no chance of that here, roads are so busy and they don't like cyclists, got squirted from a car, not nice. The campsite had a pizza ban which sold nice things and you could pay by card. There are some lovely footpaths to explore that take you to clean areas of the Thames River which people swim in. If I come back here I will come with that plan in mind rather...
