We came here as we have vegan friends and this place offered vegan options. The menu had some really good options, we were there for Happy Hour too so got decent priced drinks, otherwise around £12 for a martini is quite a lot for me personally. The food menu also seemed expensive but once the food arrived we notices the portions were pretty decent and the food itself was delicious. Of everything we ordered, there was nothing we didn't love. I got the crispy duck, which was so good! The atmosphere is chill with decent background music at a nice level (we were there around 2pm on a Sunday). The staff were professional and chill too, the food arrived in a decent amount of time too, wasn't too slow but also wasn't too quick ro make you think its just been microwaved. I would recommend this place, especially if you are vegan.

Summary: They ignored my allergy, so don’t go if you have any allergies. My first time at a Banana Tree restaurant featured amazing food, but was overshadowed by the poor service. I can speak about the staff ignoring us whenever we asked them a question, but what really upset me was their lack of attention to my allergy. I have a sesame allergy, and when I couldn’t connect to their online menu, I asked a staff member to check with the chef if what I had ordered contained sesame. I didn’t receive a response, and assumed that my food didn’t. But I did start to feel some irritation around my lips, so I can’t say for certain if I was taken seriously. What was then worse was having ordered desert, I ate a couple spoonfuls of the rice pudding, before noticing that they’d sprinkled sesame seeds onto my pudding. Sure, they did replace it after a lot of trying to get their attention, but it was too little too late. I’m glad my allergy is only mild, and I could manage my reaction to the food myself. Training around allergies is beyond necessary for any restaurant, as nobody should feel unsafe eating the food they want. The service quality is one thing, but if safety standards are not improved, I’m not sure a place should be allowed to continue to operate. Nevertheless, that’s all out of my jurisdiction, so all I can do is strongly advise anyone with allergies to avoid this branch at all costs.

Arrived here as a group of 6, service was friendly throughout albeit very slow. First round of cocktails (2-4-1) were a bit bland and watery. Starters were alright, nothing stood out and it was all just ok. Second round of drinks were ordered as starters removed...arrived after we'd finished eating our mains. I had the massaman, a personal favourite of mine, and this one was pretty poor. It was the exact same sauce that came with the chicken satay skewers. It lacked any form of veg and was literally two tiny thighs in a watery satay sauce with some peanuts. The rest of the table described the food as "unremarkable". One of our party was served an incorrect dish (chicken instead of prawn). Took a while for it to be rectified. When we finished the second round of cocktails arrived. And then came the bill fiasco. It took ages to come and when it did, low and behold, they had charged us for the incorrect chicken dish, as well as the prawn one. We waited and eventually the bill arrived. The host graciously said he'd applied the NHS discount as an apology. A nice gesture, but we already had our NHS cards and Blue Light Cards at the ready .... All in all, the meal was well below average at best, service was slow and it wasn't even busy. What a waste of a meal out...

The food here was good, the prices fair, and getting a table on a Friday night wasn’t a problem at all. But the service bothered me - to the point that I probably won’t go back. This is one of those restaurants where [frustratingly] a service charge is added to the bill. Yes, I get it’s discretionary, but allow me and only me to have that discretion. If I want to add it, I will. I shouldn’t have to opt out of paying for what was, on this occasion, non-existent service. It makes the world of difference to a customer to be asked about the enjoyment of their meal whilst eating it. Despite the restaurant being quiet, yet inundated with staff, not a single person took the time to ask how everything was. And nor were we asked when I plates were taken away. So I’m left scratching my head here - what service exactly am I paying for? Clearly, Banana Tree has gone down the US restaurant route where they get a tip regardless of the quality of service.

Had a lovely time eating in and having lots of different foods!! The staff were lovely and although I feel that customers could have been spread out a bit more had a lovely time. It was interesting to see the menu online and the happy hour was great. Having mix and match two for one could be even better. The aubergine dish was amazing and the Pad Thai was great as well. It was nice to have the window open as well and the student discount was great. Update June 2023: The staff are really lovely! However the food quality seems to have gone down and it always feels as even where is a space they put you in a small space next to other customers and with music going as well it is very difficult to talk. You cannot use meerkat discount and have 2 for 1 cocktails which was not written anywhere as well. Although I used to love this place I think the ambience, price and lack of communication is going to stop me from coming back sadly.

My recent visit to Banana Tree in Oxford was truly enjoyable. Despite not having a reservation, we were fortunate to be seated quickly and didn't have to wait long before being attended to. The service was efficient and welcoming from the start. The highlight, of course, was the food. I ordered the Bun Bo Salad, which was bursting with flavor—absolutely delicious! The menu also offered a wide range of options, catering well to vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free preferences, making it an inclusive dining spot for various dietary needs. The location and ambiance added to the overall experience, making it a great choice whether you're looking for a casual meal or something a bit more special. I would highly recommend Banana Tree for anyone seeking fantastic food and a pleasant dining atmosphere in Oxford.
