A hidden gem just behind the A3! We visited on Charles Dickens' birthday, so admission was free, which was nice 😉 This is the house where Dickens was born when his father worked for the Roalyal Navy, and gives you a really good idea of how they lived in a time when poverty and disease were rife in England. They weren't well off, but "respectable," and (as was the norm back then) they had a [lowly-paid] maid to cook and clean for them. The house is beautifully preserved and well worth a visit, if only to travel back in time. You may see actors in period costume or hear members of The Dickens Society reading passages from his books.

Very friendly welcome with a great introductory speech from the lady on the front desk. The room notes are just the right length and there are several detailed panels to read on the way round too. Lots of stairs mean it's not ideal for the less mobile amongst us but it is a lovely diverting visit with a nice gift shop containing some great items at a range of prices. We bought a leather bookmark and two Dickens novels and got change from £7. The is a small paid car park nearby although on-street parking a little further away is free.

The museum was interesting to look at. There isn’t much information about his life in Portsmouth as he was only there for the first two years of his life. It mainly had information about his parents, family and his life and career in London/Kent. It is important to note that it does not have much of the Dickens’ families possessions. However, one of the possessions they did have was a couch in which Dickens’ had passed away on according to the museum. This was donated by his sister in law. It’s a three storey house with stairs so this is something to consider if you struggle with stairs. Note: £6.60 for an adult ticket and it’s free for Portsmouth residents! The bus 20 goes from the city centre to the museum. Once you get off the stop, walk through the underpass and you will get onto commercial road. The house is on the right hand side (it’s a White House) and the entrance is down the stairs. It’s only open on Thursday and Sundays

Lovely place to visit on a day out - well worth the walk from the busier parts of town. Nice, peaceful road to walk down then into a beautiful house that really captures the feel of a different period. Worth reading all the display boards. The shop downstairs has some nice gifts and souvenirs. The staff were very helpful and eager to chat!

Short stay in Portsmouth dedicated to this place! From the kind people that welcome you, to the details kept in this museum - truly amazing to walk around the 3 floors and have peak into the life back in the days and the life of Charles Dickens! The souvenirs are just the right amount and not commercial at all. Thank you!

Finally I ve been there and it was a nice, smooth, quick and humble experience. If you are a literature person, I do recommend to visit. A 3 storey humble house. The staff in welcome desk gave a nice introduction and welcomed friendly. I liked the photo that Dickens surrounded by his characters.
