It's just a beautiful place, beach and feeling.....ironically only spoilt by the fact that it is so wonderful, that it gets very crowded on weekends, Bank Holidays, winter or summer! Too many cars, not enough parking, could benefit from a park and ride to keep vehicles out of the area. Beaches are stunning, as is the scenery, and you might even find a fossil or two if you are lucky. Plenty of places to eat and drink, as well as a good selection of seaside themed shops, there's even an amusement centre at the pier for the kids, crazy golf and beach huts you can hire. The cliff top walks are amazing but watch your step as its a sheer drop! Check the high tide times too as you don't want to get cut off by the incoming sea as you walk beneath the cliffs on the shore line. Mind for land slides from time to time too, so stay away from the foot of the cliffs. Sandy and pebble beach and there is a section which is a no go zone for dogs, to keep it clean for everyone. Be prepared to queue for a long time at peak days if you want a car parking space (fees apply). Worth a walk to the end of the pier and you might even see people fishing and a great place for surfers. There are 2 toilet facilities one at each end of the main sea front walk (both wheelchair friendly) and car parks do have disabled spaces but again they get very busy. Head up into the town if you want to see some great independent retailers and small business, there is even a nice antique place down a side street and a well known supermarket. You can walk up/down the steps up to the town, or better still, for a small fee take the hill side tram which is a great experience and funds the keeping of this great piece of history. All in all such a wonderful, beautiful and invigorating part of the sea shore. Well worth a visit but please be respectful of nature, cleanliness and responsible dog...
Read moreA vast clean and tidy beach , where you can walk North to Marske. On my visit only surf boarders and a few people were using it , so it looked empty. From the pier, south dogs are welcomed and allowed , to the north of the pier dogs are not allowed until October and through the winter months. At the bottom funicular station , there are public toilets , which were clean and in good order and free to use. Around this beach fronted area there are places where you can get hot and cold drinks , ice cream , fish and chips and other food to eat in or take away. To the north of the pier on a concrete walkway are the beach huts that are popular at all British seaside places. The 208 m pier (opened in 1869) is a leisurely walk towards the sea and the bracing sea air , and it's free. The funicular tramway is a 1 in 4 incline that travels 120 feet from top to bottom and costs £1.60 each way per person ( a permanent resident can purchase a cheaper annual pass) and there are other options for families. It's worked by water weight and gravity , it's the oldest of its kind still in operation in Great Britain and the second oldest in the world, so it should be on...
